My grandfather always held that Ezzard Charles would beat Liston. Could have been nostalgia on his part since he was coming of age when Charles was champion, but there's an argument to be made that Charles at his best could have turned the trick against Liston.

Ezzard Charles was a great fighter, and unlike Patterson I don't think he'd fold up like the houses of straw and sticks after the Big Bad Wolf got done with them if he was across the ring from Liston, but the only way he beats Liston is with a tire iron, and Sonny still might very well take it away from him and shove it up his bum.

The poster you're replying to has a quite frankly odd obsession with denigrating Liston and boosting Marciano. Literally the only reason, he's trying to give Charles a chance is to take out two birds with one stone, boost Marciano by extension, and knock Liston down below him.

I've come to respect your views even if I don't necessarily agree with them.

I think Liston was at one time a sparring partner for Ezzard Charles. Someone should make a Charles vs Liston thread. Frankly, if Charles would have a chance (I think he'd lose) against prime Louis, I think he'd have a chance against Liston

And the only reason you're saying Charles doesn't have a chance is because you want to denigrate Marciano.

Charles is one of my favourite fighters, but I literally laughed out loud reading those last 4 words. I think it was the otherwise earnest nature of your post that meant that they took me surprise.

Tons of respect for Charles and he would not back down an iota from Liston, and it's not out of the realm of possibility for him to pull off an upset, but peak, motivated, sober, non-ancient Liston would IMO just be way too much for him.

Charles is my #5 p4p fighter of all time, but I'd favour the much bigger Liston too, though hopefully Ezzard's sphincter would remain intact.

Peak Charles would be very high on my P4P list too.

If you agreed with them, it would be a less interesting forum.

While I think that Charles would lose, he might have gave a hard time to a peak Joe Louis. If you think he would have been a task for Louis, it would not be far fetched to think he could give a hard time to Liston. Charles was better than Machen TBH and could do everything Machen could do.
