Why the age discussion is relevant here? Liston peaked in 1959-61 period, regadless of his age at that time.
Very hard one to call. Nonetheless I'll take the plunge. These two guys are quite similar in some ways. Sonny's always compared with George Foreman but apart from their intimidatory presence they were very different (Young George) Both Sonny and Joe were boxer/punchers. Joe had the edge in combination punching while Sonny had,in my opinion, the better jab. Both had right hands that could down the Incredible Hulk. Putting my neck out I would say that handspeed could be the tiebreaker here and Louis takes that one. After a thriller, with both men hurt several times,Joe stops Sonny by the eleventh or twelfth round. But I say this with hesitation. It could easily go the other way.
I wouldn't recommend putting ur neck out against either guy let alone in their primes. Ur head might be sent to the nosebleeds.
Without reading the comments I know what most of the people typed.Joe Louis would win and then give some stupid reason. In in reality Louis and Liston were overrated. Liston would still destroy Joe Louis. Louis was chinny, He looked good because he faced a really poor level of opponents. He also fought in a era where the skills were lesser.
The 207 Abe Simon ll version of Louis might have a chance. He d have to get inside Liston’s reach and blast his combos. It would take the greatest performance of his career. That said Louis is a 4 to 1 underdog going into this fight. Boxing had a color line before WW ll which Louis benefited from. After the war when it came down he didn’t look so unbeatable suddenly against the top black competition. As a matter of fact he lost to the first 2 black fighters he fought after the war. Whipped by Charles and robbed Walcott.
