Joe Louis vs. Vitali Klitschko

The close encounter that C.A. had with Marshall Tillman spooked me a great deal.......... I know nothing about Tillman, but I do know he wasn't suppose to almost KO Arreola on HBO.....

Interestingly enough, this poll is not so lopsided as one might have thought that it would be.

 

I'm curious as to if Vitali Klit could fit his paws into a mere 6 to 8 oz. glove from yesteryear.?.?.? After adding all the wrapping and tape to his paw, it gets pretty tough to slip into a smaller type glove.....

Is too much being made of these figures though?

Due to a comparativley late start in the sport and repeated injuries Vitally Klitscko has not shared a ring with the sme proliferation of world class oponents as sombody like John Ruiz, or Hasim Ramhan.

Now I don't think that Ruiz or Ramhan is in his class as a fighter but at the same time I am not going to compare his career statistics to theirs because they have had far more fights against ranked oponents.

My point is that the claims of what Vitally Klitschko is capable of head to head are being made on the basis of a lot of fights against non entities and a small number of performances against top rate fighters (some of which are verry impresive).

Am I the only person who thinks that his record is a little inconclusive?

 

Pardon me.... I spaced....... Not washed up Marshall Tillman, I meant Travis Waker hammering Arreola late last year........

No, you are not.

I don't think much of his record either. Especially when we consider that Corrie Sanders, Herbie Hide and Sam Peter may very well be the best fighters he's ever beaten. But again, I'm also looking at styles and physical attributes among other things. Just to recap, I favor Louis to beat Klitschko, but I'm not about to bet money on him just walking right up to Vitali, throwing a barage of combos at will, then watching the man drop.

 

Interesting thought, but V.K. has also been a kick-fighting champion as well..... Not that it matters, however, you gotta be pretty tuff and rugged to hang in there with some of them kickers........

I know my man Texas Cobb was a former kick-fighter prior to becoming a full-fledge stand-up boxer of the western style.... NO! Cobb was not a great fighter by any means, but he did well for himself.........

YES! To hell with the record... Let's just go with size and attributes...... Klit is a hulk who has great power and seemingly a pretty good defense.... He use's his height to his advantage..... From what I have seen, V.K. is not there to be nailed like former Joe Louis victims were like "Carnera, Simon and The Baer bros." were.......

And they haven't got any slimmer, have they ?

The 80s had some fat ones, Leroy Jones, Tony Tubbs, Greg Page, Tim Witherspoon. But some well-conditioned ones too, like Weaver, Tyson, Berbick, Bruno, Thomas.

Same with the 00s, we've seen Danny Williams, Corrie Sanders, Sam Peter, Hasim Rahman, David Tua looking blubbery in title fights, James Toney of course. Even guys like Ruiz, Chagaev, Botha have crept up in weight at times. But the Klitschkos are solid.

The 00s must be "The era of the chronically obese heavyweight"

 

But if you actualy compare film of them you will see that Primo Carnera uses strikingly similar style and tactics to Vitally Klitscko.

He didn't hit as hard or take a punch as well as VK but there is not a gulf seperating them stylisticaly or technicaly.

 

somehow , born or through your life you lack sense if you think louis has more than a miraculous chance to win this , and i don't mean puncher's chance , becuase we know vitali's chin , and the lack of ability of someone of louis' size to reach it. louis even didn't have a big reach relative to his height , even a small one. vitali by late tko.

 

Well, what is happening here is favortism based on age of the people putting forth an opinion........... I notice that older folks 50+ and over are totally behind Joe Louis, while younger fans 18 to 40 seemingly favor Vitali Klitschko...... Myself, I am between 40 to 50 yrs of age, so I'll look closely at both men........

I have NO DOUBT that Jack Johnson and Joe Louis were the BEST heavies from 1887 to 1960...... After '60, things get more complicated to judge.......... Though my pick is Ali with Larry Holmes following right behind......... However, certainly guys like Tyson, Holy, Lewis and the "K" bros. are in the mix, as well............

As much as I admire guys like Jeffries, Dempsey, Marciano, Frazier & Bowe, I also feel that they were very beatable when pitted against a young and skilled tiger with speed and coordination.....

I had already mentioned the "Slob Era" of heavies to Janitor that roughly began officially around 1978 and has carried onward eversince today........... Fact is, yes, we have lotsa' slobs at heavyweight these days, but at least they have a clue as to how to box / fight....... Not all the slobs over the last 30 yrs have been bumpkins looking for quick cash.......
