It is not reactionary to defend the notion that an established great such as Joe Louis would be crushed by an injury-prone modern giant who lost his legacy bout!

From a record standpoint, Louis' is the best in the division.

From an opponents' standpoint, Louis routed giant men. They did not particularly trouble him. Vitali lost to the only great he fought -an old, fat one.

I am sure we all on the whole would welcome greatness in the division today.

Flunking the scenario of Vitali over Louis has nothing to do with nostalgia, but with a woeful lack of evidence.

I think Vitali beats him easily.

The size and strength difference is enormous. Yea yea size doesn't matter, Louis beat big men before bla bla bla. Vitali moves around the ring in his usual fashion dodging and deflecting and doing everything possible to not get hit. Grabbing arms, clinching and leaning on Louis when he gets on the inside, frustrating Louis and pissing off everyone at home who wants to see Vit get Ko'd. The shots he does get hit with he'll just suck it up and keep going. UD or usual late KO for V.K depending.

Obviously in terms of all time greatness Joe Louis>>>>V. Klitschko any day of the week.
But if we could time transport both fighters in their primes to the same location. I'm picking Klitschko.

Ive enjoyed this thread to but i am in no way buying any argument that says Vitali Klitschko can even compete with Joe Louis, not because i think Joe Louis is the greatest Heavyweight Champion ever but because i think Vitali Klitschko is so obviously average ..

In purely basic terms, Joe Louis was a highly skilled, powerful heavyweight Champion that should at the very least rate in the top 5 Heavyweight Champions of all time, (i have him behind Ali and Johnson at 3rd but thats a personal opinion) .. Vitali on the other hand still manages to look distinctly average in the worst Heavyweight division in history .. Why has this thread had so many posts ? Vitali hasnt impressed me once, i give him zero credit, he is without a doubt the Primo Carnera of this era .. He wins fights because of his cautiousness and his ability to use the jab from his superior height .. There is no movement and no fluid boxing ability, he's flat footed and ultra frightened to take any kind of punch. The only reason he makes headlines is because of the deficiency of the whole heavyweight division. This is not only the weakest Heavyweight Division in history, it must rank as the weakest division in the history of boxing .. The division is a joke, almost as big a joke as comparing this slow flat footed bum to Joe Louis !!

And for the record i thought Lennox Lewis was almost as over-rated as Klitschko, Joe Louis would have beaten him convincingly too .... You cant just take centre ring and fire off jabs at will against a guy like Louis, he's a proper fighter, something that Klit and Lewis never faced .... The last 2 'proper' Heavyweight champions were Holyfield and Holmes. Tyson turned boxing into a circus sideshow so i always try and ignore his claims to greatness, far too much bull**** with Mike Tyson ..

The poll reflects the volume and quality of their respective records.

Depending on how you would see it of course.
