Joe Louis was a phenomal fighter.. Punch power, accuracy, speed, combos, technique.. He was an offensive machine when he let his punches go and could really do some damage with his right hand.
He has a great, great resume with lots of quality wins+ alot of consistency..

    Typical formula for anti-Klitschko haters.

STEP 1 Choose some successful fighter from the distant past who fits these criteria:
    A) was a world champ
    B) was black
    C) was from the US
    D) fought so long ago that you cannot make comparisons by comparing fighters that
they fought to the K bros competition!

STEP 3 Wait for some more US Klitschko haters to arrive to back them up
    [or post under other usernames]

Voila! They have found someone who would dominated the K bros

STEP 4 Leave for 1 week to settle and repeat with another fighter from the 'Golden Age'

    Lovely Jubbly!

    I got:

    1) Ali (by a hair)
    2) Louis
    3) Holmes

I think Larry was a better over all fighter than Lennox

Ali refusing to fight in an unjust war is fine by me. Louis served the United States and was destroyed by a racist goverment. Ask Louis's son how well Joe had it going along with the government and the being deferential to the racists around him. As far as boxing goes they are 1 and 1a no matter how you look at.

If Cory Sanders could bag Vlad, Louis, who punched like a ****ing jackhammer, would have a chance. Wlad and Vitali are terrific but its hard to argue the heaveyweight division as a whole is anything but a steaming pile of ****. Half of these guys can barely throw a straight punch and they train for K2 by packing on 20 pounds of flab. Thompson is getting another shot without even fighting any top US contenders.

    totally agree.

Again its not Joe Louis's fault that he didnt realise that America's entry into WW2 was something of a sham coupe on Russia's oil supply too.

I have Louis ahead of Ali by a whisker myself.

Look - I respect Wlad, and consider him the clear #1 HW since Lewis' reign...and while I don't keep an ATG list he's surely gotta be up there (probably not enough good competition available to make top ten, but still up there)...and I've done my share of defending him on here against irrational haters...BUT, let's be real here...

If Wlad doesn't knock Joe down or out with the first flush 1-2 he lands, Joe is going to shoehorn his way inside with slow-and-steady carefully placed footsteps, load up some daisy-cutters, and begin to eat Wlad's soul and obliterate him.

Louis would dominate guys like Patterson.

Guys his size. In a P4P match up he's favourite with the K brothers, in a real fight where size does matter; he's not IMO.

Louis is a top-3 atg HW, historically speaking, but he wouldn't beat Wlad. He was too small, and while his hands were very fast, his footwork was slow. He'd never get inside on Wlad and would eat jabs all night till getting ktfo. I honestly think guys like Frazier and Marciano would have a better chance against Wlad. The bob-and-weave and crouch defenses would pose difficulties for Wlad in using his jab. Louis stood straight up and would walk into it. ymmv.
