I'd probably give the man in your avatar a better chance of taking Wlad out early.

Well as you have noted his a very swift puncher. Can we agree that Lois would be the best composite puncher in the division and move onto other areas?

    Head Movement

You rarely see Louis caught clean when moving in or in close. This is because his timing on the duck is sublime. He has a very good sense for what his opponent is going to do in terms of punching - if anything, it's his opponent's positioning that sometimes surprises him, throws him off, the only weak area where his offence is concerned (And never apparent after about 12 shared rounds with any given foe). I think that Louis, like Hopkins, can be seen to use timing and positiong to help him avoid punches. I think this is an area where speed doesn't harm him at all, though he does sometimes get caught when his back is straight, and could use an extra 0.01 on his slip. Again, though, it's perhaps not imporant as it is for some becase his stance is so excellent. Certainly, he seems expert at slipping the jab.

    Foot Speed

He lacks footspeed. Overall, this is a positive thing for Joe as his career panned out - he developed a style which conserved energy naturally, allowing him to put a good amount into every single punch he threw across, and late into the fight, too (the Conn bombardment was bought with economical footwork. The Walcott KO, too). But i'll admit that in comparing him to super-heavies from Bowe on, it could put him at a disadvanged - but look at it this way, his lack of "hippety hop" as Dempsey might put it means that he is always always in punching position. I think that when we speak about Louis sacrificing defence for offence this is exactly what we mean, exactly.

    Size

Not interested. As far as I am concened YOU have to prove to ME this is a problem. Tyson was short and light by now standards. He would go through this division like greased **** through a goose, no question. Size is just another stat. He is certainly not to small, and he manhandled bigger men in his time, no question. Meantime, I would suggest that agianst CERTAIN fighters ;) being slightly smaller might be an aid to his roll and counter. Two of those counter right hands on Wlad's face. Ooopsie.

For the first time in a while I find myself in total disagreement with you. Wlad hasn't really shown me great punching off the backfoot. He'd be in with a guy who would look to close to middle distance or inside distance and has exactly the defensive tools to to do it. You have seen the above video and Louis' habit for slipping punces and throwing massive counters of them. Louis isn't lightning but he is natural. The big man who beats Louis would be one who could abandon the jab on occasion and pre-counter. Wlad is lost without his jab, i'd bet. Anyway, he'd use it, Louis would step in natural, and Wlad would retreat unless he got caught, in which case he would be hurt.

I can't imagine Wlad winning 1/5 personally. That's assuming he doesn't **** his trunks in the dressing room.

He doesn't "lack defence" though. He is static, and his hand positioning is intended for punching, but so what? Sweet Pea, you are doing what every other guy has been doing with Klitschko, matching what he should be able to do with Joe Louis. Even then, Louis wins for me, but if Klitschko throws ONLY jabs in the first 3 rounds against Louis like he did with Ibragimov, he will get stopped at some point in those first three rounds, no question - and he would be WAY more nervous here.

Loius is one paced, as you've pointed out, but does he need more here? He was very very good at using only six paces where another fighter might need 8, he'll be in punching position, in countering position before Wlad knows he is being stalked.

I think Wlad's only chance - literally - is to surprise Louis and attack him.

    Joe Louis versus Superheavies

    Primo Carnera - 6'5, 260LBS, TKO6 - smashed to the canvas 3 times, bullied
    Abe Simon - 6'4, 250LBS, TKO13 - smashed to the canvas 4 times, bullied
Abe Simon II -TKO6, Simon was twice saved by the bell. Louis bullied, harrassed and backed up the big man who he completely owned for the whole fight
Buddy Bear - 6'6 240LBS, DQ'd seven having been smashed to the canvas three times
    Buddy Bear II - KO1

Size is no protectin against Louis.

It's a shame people who underrate Joe Louis actually don't watch many of his fights to back it up.

He was one hell of a fighter. Today it's all about little technique, questionable courage and big strong guys with poor conditioning. Going the distance now means a whole other thing than in Louis' day. I'm over-generalizing, but you get the idea.

They bang the hell out of each other today, if we're lucky, but I don't see any of them beating, let alone KO'ing a superbly trained Joe Louis.

The same but to a lesser extent goes for Walcott, Charles, Schmeling, Sharkey, Baer, Braddock in their heyday, these were very tough men. People forget so fast. Or never knew to begin with.

Joe was a sharp shooter, and hit very, VERY hard and precise. He didn't take you out with one shot like but rather with a frightening precise avalanche of hard shots that put you into a weel chair.

Just ask Walcott, he'll tell ya.

I think only Marciano, Liston, Foreman, Shavers and Tyson come close in terms of hitting power but they weren't so accurate as Louis was. Joe was great, not just good, for more than 10 years.

I'v watched them all in action in near all of their archived fights.

His KO's rank among the most impressive and devastating in HW's history. It's only because fights back then were usually filmed from a distance and in fuzzy black/white instead of in-your-face sweat and guts, and in color and multiple camera angles, that Louis' figts SEEM less involving, less powerful and slower to the unexperienced eye.

But Joe was also very strong mentally, an opponent could never sense what Joe was thinking, his face was a blank. That together with his punching power made his opponents fear him.

Sure he occasionaly beat bums, but all fighters bad mediocre or great fight bums from now and then.

He has an unequalled career record for a heavyweight.
And this is coming from basically an Ali fan. I recognize Joe Louis for what he was: awesome.

Wlad is better then those guys .

Nobody is saying that size is all you need against Louis but size with the correct style makes thing very difficult for him.

Louis might beat Wlad but i would bet on Lewis to beat him.

    good post :good

Louis is atg 1 or 2 hw with out a doubt

except for the shock defeat against schmeling (which was avenged) he didnt do to much wrong.

When he fought marciano he was well past his sell by date

To beat Louis you needed speed and great technical ability i.e ez charles one of the most underated fighters on this forum an atg lhw and top p4p fighter.

Billy conn also gave Louis fits but its smaller faster fighters

Of course this is a diff era and it is every bit as much as week as the 40's, but to say wlad beats him because he is bigger is a crock of ****. Louis speed is desceptive and he was technicaly in another class, and his inside fighting is far superiour to any one of today.

Have some repsect for longest reigning heavyweight champion of the world in history :good

P.s i dont know about him koing Lewis as i have read but of course with his power and hand speed it is possible.

Of course. But Simon has a win over Walcott which is better than anything Wlad has, that's for sure.

People DO say that. Regardless, as I've said, I think Wlad has a **** style for beating Louis, though it is the bones of the right style.

I pick Louis to beat Lewis by knockout, but with the right fight plan it's very close.

This is quite a statement. There are a few that should be rated better than him IMO that you don“t mention, and even more that are on par. Great boxer, but this seems an overstatement to me.

Wlad is a B version of Lewis but if he fights carefully he makes things difficult for Louis if they fought ten times Wlad steals at least 3 decisions.

Louis KOs early 90s reckless Lewis but loses a decision to late 90s early 2000 Louis. A mature Lewis looking for the decision win was almost impossible to engage by a Boxer Louis size if he chose to keep it at his distance . Lewis power makes it difficult and dangerous to try and walk him down. And if you do get in range he will either tire you out with clinches or use his uppercut to force you back.

Louis has not the speed or style to get the fight in his range . If you cannot outspeed him or put him on the wrong foot with your footwork Lewis keeps the fight at HIS range .

Louis methodical steady approach wont work because it cant bring Lewis out of his comfort zone and pace.

I would pick Tyson or Dempsey to be able to handle Lewis based on styles seeing as they have the speed and footwork to close the range and force Lewis out of his comfort zone.

I appreciate everyone's input and opinion. I have mine, you guys have yours. I'm of the opinion that Louis's limitations hurt him as much as his technique helps him. Technique really isn't everything, and that has to be noted.

As for the matchups, you guys have your opinions, I have mine, but I really don't see Louis having a chance with someone like Lennox, while he has at least a chance against Wlad. In fact I'd be willing to bet big money on it if A) The matchup were possible, and B) If I had big money to begin with.

Yes, Joe is the best HW of all times.
Tall fighters like Klit and Lewis had weak chins, Joe would find it!
