Textbook in the sense that this is the way you teach people who are new to the sport to hold their body, to move and react, to stand and punch, etc while they're getting started. In that sense, Louis is one of the more textbook fighters out there.

For example, you don't teach someone to fight like Muhammad Ali or Pernell Whitaker... those who can't pull it off, (which is almost everyone, whether because they're not quick or smart or strong enough) and try to do it will get KO'd. Louis' style though, is one that most people could imitate as a starting point while they find what exactly works best for them.

Tyson used to watch ALOT of old high light reel. Along fighters like Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis was the one he always emulated.

Yeah he also watched Marciano, but it's no wonder Tyson was such a great puncher he along with Louis had the greatest punching ability ever IMO.

He said what you said had no relevance. He's correct.

While this is a noble answer, Louis did not have the perfect textbook style. Louis was ko'd in his prime by a guy (Schmeling) who saw a flaw in his style. To succeed in this sport, you have to commit the least mistakes, and when you lose, capitalize on your past mistakes. Donald Curry held his hands up perfect, yet could not keep his so-called textbook style perfect when he faced an aggressive fighter in McCallum. Trainers teach you the textbook stance when you start fighting. What that fighter does with that advice is how he creates his own style.

Most definitly but they were "trained" that way. Both guys put there punches together extremely well and in a much more educated fashion than Marciano did. Bearing in mind both fought a better standard of opposition as well than Marciano and were more devastating in doing so.

Exactly. That is how I have it also. Duran, McCallum, Finito Lopez...Sal Sanchez, even Barney Ross. These guys had styles ahead of their time. Imo there are too many style that have been successful to pick one style over the other.

Louis is one of the best text book fighters ever I don't doubt that. All I'm saying is there are so many text book styled fighters that I can't choose one over the other.
