Louis is a good choice and is definetly a fighter you think of for the word textbook, others that spring to mind would be arguello(probably my number 1), marquez, hopkins, lopez etc

    Ali was better than Liston.

But Williams had also been shot ;)

This is true. I believe he lost an incredible amount of weight as a result and a kidney. But its all farily subjective.:tong

Exactly. What happened to Williams had nothing to do with what Ali did to him. He was in the ring with Ali, and Ali put on his most masterful performance.

:good Oh absolutely, I was just saying that in addition to Louis and Dempsey, Tyson also studied Marciano, I think Louis was the best though he had an answer for anything, although Tyson was the most entertaining.

Louis's comp is good, not great. Conn and Walcott were the best pure boxers that he fought, and they gave him hell. If that were ali in their place, he would've finished Louis in those fights, but I am a diehard Ali fan so don't mind my fiction lol...

Louis was OLD when he fought Walcott and Conn. he lost alot of his prime during WW2. Who know's what would happen if they fought each other at thier peaks, both along with Jack Johnson are the 3 greatest ever IMO.

TheGreat, i'm a wee bit surprised you say that Conn and Louis didn't meet at peak. I feel they did, the first time. Conn had the perfect plan and Louis blew him up anyway.

The same can be said of Marciano though. Even Ali had his fair share of beating up old timers like Archie Moore. I think Marciano gets more stick though because he beat up a broke old Joe Louis, went life and death with Ezzard Charles and beat up an old Walcott.Other than those names his ledger is fairly weak by all accounts.

Basically, I feel there is no sane way to rate Louis in front of Ali because of the resume question. That's my feeling. But I don't think there is much between them in terms of how good they were. I pick Louis to beat Ali (I know this places me in the minority) but Ali to do better against the field at large (Louis could lose to Johnson and Tunney, for example, which would never, ever happen to Muhammad). But anyway or no, the ranking should always be:

    1 - Ali
    2 - Louis

And I submit that anyone who ranks it the other way around is making a mistake, all due respect to the given poster and to Joe.
