Louis is better than Foreman,in an overall technical sense, but anything could have happened if these two had met, prime for prime. George's raw power could wipe out any advantage that Joe had. I'd back Louis to win,but with slight reservations.

    Schmeling was 31, hardly ancient.
He had beaten the number one contender Steve Hamas , a year earlier , by 9 rds ko , avenging a previous loss, Uzcudun, by dec ,and Neusel by ko 9 rds .Neusel had been on a roll with wins over Loughran ,and Levinsky.
Schmeling was the 4th rated challenger when he met Louis ,who was number 9.
Louis badly underestimated Schmeling in 1935,with the benefit of hindsight, you should not.

I can see either guy winning 2bh

Lois could beat Foreman to the punch with those pinpoint accurate combos.

Then again George could ust walk through everything and outbomb him like he did Frazier.

Ali himself stated he was shocked at how good George was at cutting off the ring..

I don't think either fighter here just massacres the other. Louis might be faster and better at putting together combinations, but Foreman has a good chin. Louis' footwork could also trouble Foreman, provided he used it, but Foreman was very, very effective at cutting off the ring and stalking down his man. If Louis wins this, he's going to have to avoid standing there and trading or getting cornered, because frankly, if Foreman hits flush and smells blood, then I think he will be able to finish Louis.

I think the referee might also come into play a bit here. If Foreman is allowed to push and shove to keep Louis at that perfect range, then I think things could be tougher for Louis. If I were in Foreman's corner, I'd be strongly encouraging him to actually use his jab, because it is a good, solid jab, which might help him try and slow down Louis long enough to land something bigger.

All that side, I do rate Louis higher in an ATG sense. I just think that Foreman had a chin good enough to possibly let him land one of those bombs of his. Either way, I wouldn't be game to bet on the outcome.

If they were the same size I'd be picking Louis by mid round stoppage. Louis is the better boxer and the better puncher. Foreman is a great puncher but he swings wide and is open to counter shots. While along with his power Louis is almost fundementaly perfect.
The only thing that has ne hesatating to pick Louis is that at the time of the Max Bear fight he weighed 198 and for most of his championship run was aroun 200. Efectively a cruserweight.
Ali's win over Foreman showed that Foreman has stamna issues.
I don't see Louis going for the kill from the first round. I see him baiting Foreman into attacking him and countering his attacks. Louis has an underrated defense, and it is going to serve him very well in this fight.
I think this would be a 15 rounder. I think Louis's hard counter shots will start to take effect in the 9th allowing him to really open up and stop Foreman.

  6. admitidly i havent seen much of joe louis but i cant see this going any way other than a foreman knockout , if someone could give an explanation on how they think louis wins id like to hear it

Joe Louis would not last half a round with Foreman in his prime. Not a chance.

I love Louis, but contrary what others say I think this is a bad match up stylewise. He's out reached for a start by a guy with a powerful jab and who's big, hugely strong, and immovable, who unlike virtually all of Joe's opponents wouldn't be intimidated.
Foreman always held his ground that was the big problem for Frazier if he couldn't fight going forward then he couldn't fight period.
Now I know Frazier stylstically isn't Louis but Joe in his own methodical way was always used to shuffling forward and his opponents giving ground, big George would simply refuse to do this and if he put Louis on the back foot consitently how would Joe react, was he a great counter puncher?
Basically what I'm saying is that some of Louis's game would be taken away,he still might stop Foreman but I see this as a very difficult assignment for Joe.

Louis was one of the masters at fighting on the back foot in the history of the division. If you try to back him up you are playing right into his hands.

He engaged in all manner of subtle subterfuge to trick his oponents into coming towards him. If you give him an oponent who trys to impose the fight on him he is going to think that all of his christmases have arived at once.

The two elements that Louis thrived on were an oponent trying to press the fight and an opponent leaving himself open to counter. Foreman would provide him with both in abundance.

Thanks for that Janitor,it's just that in most of the films I've seen of Louis he always seems to be moving steadily forward,he just seemed to creep up on his opponents and before they knew it he was in range and unloading.

    Sure.

Most of his opponents decided that it probably wasn't a good idea to go after him. When you got sombody like Max Baer who was willing to force the fight on him he seemed to adapt to the back foot prety well.

One trick Louis often does is to step back from an opponent when they are trying to set up a punch on him. Then when the opponent steps forward BAM!

You pretty much disqualify your opinion with the first admission.

To answer your question, Louis is so much faster and more fluid than Foreman, he would be landing 3 punches to 1 and have George on the end of a yo-yo. Especially if he employs that cross-arm ****. The size difference is being way-overdone here. There really isn't a lot of difference, maybe an inch and half of height and one stone. Lastly, Louis faced bombers, guys like Max Baer, Buddy Baer, Schemling, Galento, Abe Simon... this would not be unprecedented for him.

I love Louis,I'm Ali's biggest fan but I have no problem with people saying Joe was the greatest of all time.
