You've heard of things like the fruit of the month club. Care to be a subscriber to the ultimate bum club of all time? Take a look at some of the horrific opponents that Louis beat up on.

    Jack Roper

    Tony Musto

    Gus Dorazio

    Johnny Paycheck

    Johnny Davis

    Al Mccoy

    Jim Braddock

    Tony Galento

    Harry Thomas

    Abe Simon

    That's a poor list.

Galento and Simon were genuine top contenders. Both were stopped.

Braddock was to win the title. I wonder how you can become member of the bum of the month club while being champion :patsch He just outpointed Max Baer, top20 HW according to most as well as a few other contenders.

Thomas was KO'd in 5, Jack Roper in a single round, Musto KO'd in nine, Gus Dorazio in two rounds, Johnny Paycheck also in two rounds (beautiful KO), Johnny Davis in one round and McCoy stopped in six rounds.

All of them got knocked out and most of them early. Ali went 15 with Wepner, went the distance with Evangelista as well as some other aweful fighters like Dunn, Coopman, not to mention losing to 6-0-1 Leon Spinks. Holmes went the distance with Rodriguez, fought Scott Ledoux, Leroy Jones and Zanon.

:good :good :good Louis was a dominant Champ and did not avoid anyone, The same can not be said for Holmes, and you said it all about Ali who was less than impressive vs guys who could not beat one of Joe's so called Bums

Holmes failed to give certain fighters rematches.

Louis at least rematched fighters that troubled him like Godoy and Conn.

a long lost poster evaluated the 'bum of the month club' and according to the fight reports a lot of those 'bums' gave louis a good fight.

I'd love to see what ATG's blew out every fighter, regardless of quality, that they ever fought.

The "bum of the month" thing originally started not because of the quality of his opponents (there were some excellent ones there), but because they all got knocked out! I mean look up Louis' record after he beats Braddock. It's all wins and nearly all by KO. You got knocked out by Joe Louis? Okay, join the club. Rather than criticism, it was a complimentary term because so many fell prey to the champion.

    Bums????????

Any fighter who had the guts to face the murderous punches of Joe Louis should not be considered a Bum.

well said mcvey. They always quote the Ali fights after Manila when he was in rapid decline. Ali in the 60s cleaned house. I don't think one title fight was close. Liston, Patterson, Terrell - one sided. But they say he struggled against Chuvalo, Mildenberger and Folley. If that is struggling, Marciano must have struggled in nearly every title fight. How many rounds did Chuvalo and Mildenberger win?

Most of the guys on the list of the thread starter where bums who in other era's would'nt have deserved a titleshot.

And people talk about Holmes & Tyson fighting less then stellar  oppositon .

Joe gets a pass for fighting bums while other champions who overall fought better contenders get criticized for seemingly fighting less then stellar opposition.

Give Holmes the same opponents Louis fought during his reign and he clears it maybe Wallcot beats him and Conn has a small chance other then that Holmes beats them all rather easily. Ditto for Tyson.
