Joe Marie Tangaro Noynay vs. Qixiu Zhang, 10 rounds @ super featherweight

 

Round 1

Noynay is pressing the action, prodding at Zhang with a right jab from a comfortable medium-long range and then driving in with left uppercuts to his chest & chin, wending his way inside with his body swung like a shutting gate. Zhang is stepping counterclockwise and ducking every few steps to jab or roundhouse at the waistline, but not pausing for a receipt. Noynay having to reach for him but still making slight contact with the southpaw jab and uppercut.

Round 2

Zhang is making Noynay come to him, and showing a bit of sprightly movement and reflexive slickness as he drops back into a crouching Philly shell and then launches springboard pull-counter rights, some of them zapping Noynay dead center on his face and clearly stinging (or at least surprising) him. Noynay is following, bowling in low with the left as Zhang keeps decreasing his altitude while bunching himself into a small ball of a target, but Noynay unable to exert his pressure as effectively here as Zhang has gotten into a rhythm, scoring pot shot body jabs from outside.

Round 3

Noynay is crowding Zhang and still eating some line drive straight right hand leads as he comes in, but is able to whack Zhang on the hip with a right hook or graze his face with headsman's-ax left hand depending on which direction Zhang elects to flee. Zhang is keeping a low center of gravity, shoulders loose, overall very unctuous and slippery, but Noynay is staying with him, matching every subtle little step to never let him roam far, keeping him within reach and working body shots and chops upstairs while Zhang melts & bubbles around the ring tossing counters like a ninja's trail of caltrops to cover their escape into the night.

10-9 Noynay, close, judges almost certainly gave it to him as the crowd was egging on his every move and somewhat overreacting to even blocked shots

Round 4

Noynay is feinting with the right hook, waving the glove in the air but then shooting a left down the middle. Zhang is caught with it a few times while trying at first to duck in beneath the hook and do some body work, but after the second or third left hand brushes his scalp he learns his lesson and stops taking Noynay's bait. Zhang is sticking by the ropes, dipping his upper body to either side, using lots of neck cricks to slip punches while threading in the odd right uppercut (buoyed off the ropes). They both get rocked onto their knees by a headbutt in the middle of the ring. Time in. Noynay is power-jabbing at the face taking big overhand swings with his left, forcing Zhang into the ropes, where Noynay continues teeing off until Zhang is either caught flush or leaps in to clinch.

Unexpectedly good match-up.

 

Round 5

Noynay is working that left uppercut into the sternum & throat like a coal-stoker on a steam locomotive. Zhang is on the run. Noynay is slapping Zhang across the left coiffure with a series of downward-swatted right hooks as Zhang ambles to his left, conserving energy and relying on his boneless leans and neck bends defensively. Very intermittent pit-pat counters shot upward from Zhang, mostly caught on the gloves, letting Noynay walk him around the ring and pick spots casually.

Round 6

Noynay is crushing Zhang with the left hand now, delivering it both in straight descending fashion like a thunderbolt from Olympus and raising it like a geyser with uppercuts if the range permits. Zhang has a - cut? Loose tape on his glove? Unclear what's going on. He remains in his corner under the supervision of the ref, attended by two people in his camp for about twenty seconds while Noynay patiently stands in a neutral corner. Oh well, time in. Noynay is starting to box tall now, taking his foot off the gas and not applying so much pressure, just trotting around Zhang and popping light right jabs into his face. Zhang is cowed, not doing anything to get inside and create his own scoring opportunities, although he does make a point to squat and gyrate from the shoulders up a few times so he can show off his quick head movement and slip a few half-hearted Noynay jabs, showboating defensively a little.

Round 7

Noynay is jabbing Zhang into the ropes and looking to line up a big left cross, telegraphing his intentions but met with minimal resistance. Zhang is ducking behind cover, trying his best to frighten Noynay with cornered-animal leaps forward with ambush right hands, but Noynay stays the course, ignoring these sorties calmly, just catching the rights on the palm of his left mitt and then continuing to needle with it, jabbing repeatedly into Zhang's face and sometimes hooking off it to swat at him if he tries abruptly changing directions to move to his left. Noynay drives inside with a left to skewer Zhang on the ropes but Zhang ducks and grabs him around the waist. Clinching more frequently now, almost every time Noynay throws a non-jab. One more superman-punch right hand by Zhang countering a lazy Noynay jab while navigating past a corner, but he just skims Noynay's shoulder, and then immediately ties up.
