You seem to be missing the point, He suffered a BRAIN INJURY from an illegal blow from Jirov. He was not struggling against jirov, he was totally outboxing him for the first 9 rounds. it was not until he got caught with shots behind the head was he hurt. I said a white AMERICAN heavyweight would bring in ratings for American boxing. He didn't try to seek a big money fight after those 7 wins because he wasn't himself anymore. The old Joe mesi would not have struggled to win a decision against that Tessier guy. He probably knew he wasn't the same and decided to pursue other interests.

wow the fact that mesi has a brain injury isnt funny...

BUT WHAT IS FUNNY is that you put he has a brain injury and showed a lack of heart for not coming back right next to eachother. the hell is wrong w/ you??

read the bold face type over again and see if you see the irony in that statement

you do know he did come back right?:patsch problem was most the states woudln't sanction his fights, so he struggled and finally seen the writing on the wall and went into other things.

I like his style. He moved well had good power and put together nice combo's. totally underrated.

Mesi battered Jirov for over 8 rounds of a 10 round fight. He was beating Jirov in the 9th too... then with about 25 seconds left in the round, Jirov hit him with a brutal punch to the back of the head, which caused Mesi to take a knee... and the rest is history. Jirov was by no means even close to beating Jirov at any point in the fight until that punch to the back of the head. Mesi later said that he couldn't even remember boxing in the 10th round. Mesi's heart kept him alive in that last round. The man was bleeding on the brain from that punch to the back of the head, and survived a massive beating in the 10th.

He was medically cleared to fight again... and has fought several times since. He won all of those fights, and then put a hold on boxing to run for the New York State Senate. He won the Democratic primary but lost the final election. Joe has taken a position with the Democrat Senate Majority heading up a local Buffalo liaison office. I haven't heard anything about his boxing career as of late.

I thought that Mesi looked very good after he got back into shape during his comeback. This is Mesi during one of his last fights, AFTER the head injury.

Mesi is an intelligent guy, and I just think that he always used this as a way to turn his popularity into another career... which he has done.

Please the guy got too much credit. He was a contender at his best beating about three other contenders/fringe contenders but having some major problems in two of those wins. he did well given his ability but he wasn't gonna hold a belt and would get demolished by either klit even on a bad night for them

the TS said baby joe wouldnt beat the klits...only that he deserved a little more credit. if one of those two fights you are referring to is jirov...then read one of the posts on why he had problems in that fight. no one is making out joe to be a fallen joe frazier...just that he doesnt get enough credit

The really tragic thing about Mesi was that the punch that caused the intracranial hematoma was most likely an illegal rabbit punch by Jirov. That sucks in a huge way. I heard he was trying to be a senator or something like that, good for him, the guy is likable and has a large following in the Buffalo area. He's fought a couple of really low level cans post-Jirov but, for all intents and purposed he is done.
