Who do you guys like in a match up between these two? Gerry Cooney while he was upcoming vs Joe Mesi who we never really got to see how far he could take his career.

I might have to go as far as to say that Mesi was probably slightly more proven. Of course he never shared a ring with a man like Larry Holmes, but if it comes down to who these guys defeated, Mesi had more fights as well as beat men who were probably a bit more able bodied at the time he met them. He also had power that was comparable to Gerry's, and never suffered a loss. Cooney would have a significant height advantage and plenty of fire power, but I don't know if it would be enough. Great fight though. Would have loved to have seen it.

Both guys started fast and I think it boils down to who hurts who 1st because both were decent finishers

Well said. One thing I noticed about Mesi was when he got a little tired he became wide open for a left hook and I saw several just miss his wide open noggin and puts Cooney up by ko for me.

I agree but not sure if this fight gets to the tired stage but if it does Joe get hooked

I would give a slight edge to Cooney, but wouldn't BET on it...

Mesi was an ok fighter, but faded bad in long fights...

Mesi sucked big time. Cooney wasnt great but he was a lot more dangerous. Hed kick Mesi's ass.

    Another stoppage win for Mesi.
Mesi beat fighters on Cooney's level, so it does not require extrapolation.
It is Cooney whom never beat anyone as able as Joe Mesi.

That's true about Mesi, but Gerry Cooney wasn't exactly a long range fighter either. The Holmes fight was the only occasion that anyone really saw him go real rounds. most of his fights ended inside of 5, either because he finished them that early or because he was beaten in that time frame himself. Cooney might very well win, but I wouldn't buy too much into the stamina thing. Mesi went 10 rounds to win on a few occasions. Cooney never did.

I thought Cooney was definitely a better fighter and would beat Mesi.

I don't think it's close to be honest. Cooney by rights ought to destroy him.

Messi would have irreparable brain damage by Cooney. Messi struggled with bums. No chin. Fat boy.
