Joe Napoles -vs- Pernell Whitaker

Great close fight ! Heart wants to say `Mantequilla`, but damn Sweet Pea was SLICK... I think he`d just squeak by Napoles in a thisclose decision win... But really tight. The advantage here is Whitaker being a suthpaw and dam slippery one at that...

 

Prime Napoles was able to snake in a heat seeking Cuban missile and tko or ko whitaker.

 

Odd.. I don't remember Whitaker ever being KO'd in such a manner... Do you have these fights that give you this impression on what would happen RC?

 

Mantequilla had the ability to snake through an opponents guard with deadly accurate and at the same time, very hard punches. He would have been able to do to Whitaker what SRL did to Benitez...deck him with a jab.
No, Whitaker was never defeated like that...and he never fought anyone like Napoles either

I agree RC... my problem is that speculation can only go so far with no precedence to back it up. Sure, anything is possible, but the question is then, would it be probable. With some precedence backing up your premise/conclusion... than it can become probable.. With literally none to back up such a thing happening, I think you would agree it slips down to only possible.. even slightly possible. Let me ask you this.. would you say Whitaker is the best fighter Napoles would've ever fought 147 n below? Now, would we say the same for Whitaker and napoles being his best?

 

I have Pernell in a very close fight and very tough fight. I don't think Pernell dazzles Napoles like he did others,and Napoles would connect.

It's fine to have a bit of bias for favourites and fighters you rate really highly, but no need to make superheroes out of them.

Whitaker proved he was tough as nails when he took that hellacious beating against Trinidad.it's difficult to imagine Napoles stopping him if we're taking a best 140\147 version of pea.

Surprised so many posters going with Napoles on this site. Whitaker is very highly regarded here.

 

So is Napoles. Among those who've actually made a pick, Whitaker still leads 7-6. Then again my post was pretty much tongue in cheek. Don't have a strong opinion.

 

Neither really, although I'd lean towards Whitaker if I had to.

 

whitaker better be at his best if he's going to pull out a win here. i'll still pick sweet pea but this would be a close fight no matter which way i look at it.

 

Good call ! It`s not easy for Whitaker, and he has to be very sharp every minute with Napoles. But prime Whitaker was exremely hard to tag once, much less in combination...

 

BTW, this is a great thread ! Every now and then,someone comes up with a fight that truly is a pick-em between two greats !!
