The gloves were never changed. That story has been debunked.

But it's possible to cast doubt on this version of events with one of the most technical tools in the data-hungry journalist's arsenal - counting.

Listening to the audio recording of the fight with a stopwatch in hand, the truth emerges.

The gap between rounds one and two was exactly one minute.

The gap between rounds two and three was, again, exactly one minute.

Same again for rounds three and four.

But the gap between rounds four and five - the moment of the torn glove incident - was, precisely, one minute and six seconds.

In other words, only six seconds more than all the other intervals.

But as it was, a myth was born that Dundee had bought Ali minutes of extra time to recover.

"It's staggering how many people made mistakes writing about this. It's just rubbish," says Bunce.

"Sir Henry Cooper insisted it was minutes, most people say it was. But the gloves, they were never taken off. Dundee worked the tear, but by modern standards it was not a delay."

I want to use this opportunity to address the smelling salts accusation. They were very much part of the game then, even later. The reason they're banned is because they're dangerous to the person it's being administered to and not to his or her opponent. Watch the Thrilla. One of the combatants was administered smelling salts between three rounds and it wasn't Muhammad. Rogan knows a little about a lot of things.

Rogan pretends to know a lot more about boxing than he actually does. He is constantly screwing up facts when he ventures into that territory. And he keeps repeating that Money May is the greatest boxer who ever lived. Given the right guest I can enjoy his podcast but I wish he would steer clear of boxing. I'm sure he could do laps around me if the discussion were about MMA or BJJ.

Yes, Ali should have been disqualified due to illegal use of smelling salts.

What were the rules at the time and should every boxer who was administered smelling salts be disqualified?

Their use was prohibited in the UK since the 1950s.

Depends on regulations that were in force when the fight took place.

He has a big head, but there's very little in there. He lacks knowledge when it comes to just about anything he talks about.

I enjoy MMA but I am nowhere near knowledgeable enough to challenge his statements. I find his commentary on the fights very good, very entertaining. His enthusiasm comes through as authentic. He has access to all the best fighters and trainers, and has rolled with the best. He comes from a good place.

Hating on Rogan is easy. He puts himself out there on many, many subjects, never as an expert (except combat sports and fitness) but more as a commentator and inquisitor of more knowledgeable guests. With tens of thousands of hours of ad lib conversation, sometimes stoned, sometimes drinking, occurring over 18 years, it is just too easy to pick among the back catalog and find something that, when isolated, makes him look like a moron. Who of any of us could avoid the same with the same exposure across that breadth of topics?

    Fair points, however:

    1) Rogan makes a very good living from his opinions as a PROFESSIONAL talking head, so when he says something silly he should righly be criticized.

    2) I dont think Rogan truly believes all the BS he says about Ali. A lot of his comments are deliberately directed to raise artificial controversy and outrage = more clickbait and money.

    3) Either by chance or purpose, Rogan is using his influence to promote the ignorant "tik tok culture", the one saying "FuRYIZthEgREAtEsteVAH!!!"

Does Rogan constantly drag Ali? Why?
