In the video below JR makes the case that guys cutting weight presents a bigger advantage to a fighter than peds do. Its a rather interesting point hes making and my first reaction is to agree with him but it could by my own bias as absolutely hate all the weight cutting in boxing. What do you guys think? Im actually surprised this isnt a bigger discussion. This content is protected
I think the advantage might be hard to quantify for peds. deep down I feel all or most top guys do it so I don't think it's a big advantage in a level playing field of drugs. that said all fighters not at hwt cut weight but some cut more than others. some guys blow up overnight and are terrible. to me it's a part of the sport that said I'm all for safety measures like next day limits, 30 day weigh ins hydration testing ideally I think morning of weigh ins would be best
Been arguing the same thing for years now. Weight cutting needs to be FAR more controlled. The current process is an absolute joke.
The main problem imo with weight cutting is the guys who will often MISS WEIGHT and then win the fight and there is no repercussions for them. Darren Till after beating Wonderboy (I thought he lost like the majority of other people) missed weight by a massive 4.5 lbs gets rewarded with a title shot in his very next fight. That's the real problem that missing weight is the new ped's. The vast majority of guys missing weight go on to win the fight. It's a form of cheating like ped's. All fighters cut weight including Frankie Edgar. He cuts weight to make 145 lbs. The only fighter that I know of who simply doesn't cut weight is Floyd Mayweather. He basically walks around at approx 147-150 lbs always in shape. If guys can make weight and perform at a good level then I am fine with that. I'm not fine with guys missing weight more than once and not being forced to the higher weight class. If a guy is killing himself to make weight then he will often find that he is more competitive up in the higher class if he has good fighting skills like RDA/Gastelum but guys like Chiessa who are relying too much on their huge frame rather than their skills will find it hard up a class.
Weight cutting is very prominent in boxing, because you see these huge fighters with massive frames picking on smaller fighters with their reach and power, it is unfair.
