i am a calzaghe fan and am disappointed that he didnt have one last fight in cardiff, it didnt matter who it was against, his fans knowing it was his last fight would of flocked to the millennium stadium and he could of asked his own price. i for one am very shocked and very disappointed.
Wounldt have minded one more, but no-one out there is worth it at the momment. So it kind of makes sense. If that changes before the end of the Summer, maybe he'll reconsider.
According to his statements he did this to fulfill the desires of his children, GF maybe, possibly dad, and definately his mom. They said the retirement announcement implied this may not be permanent, but the family being involved isn't going to help the chances.
nah he wont ...he always said as soon as he retires he will never come back. shame as he would of made a $$$$ at cardiff. if i knew jones was his last fight i would of made more of and effort to raise the cash to go and watch it,and so would of a lot of other fans.he lost money by announcing it now.should have announced it before a fight not after.
it doesnt matter because there will always be one more, you can only go to the well so many times and Joe knows his body better than anybody and maybe its mental or physical who knows only he does so i wish him well.
well..i am not saying that i WANT to see him come back and risk the unbeaten record....but i do think the lure of one last 'celebration' in front of a home crowd and many more millions to his bank account will prove too much temptation... i really think, for joe, it would be the best night of his career...knowing its the last one..all those fans idolising you.. who would he fight?...a rematch with old man hopkins could be tricky...so would chad dawson, but most casual fans wont know much about chad dawson and it may not draw the bucks from overseas tv revenues...same goes to a domestic fight with carl froch or clinton woods...and a rematch with roy jones would be pointless and only tarnish his reputation.. i would say a 'safe' fight that he could probably get away with would be antonio tarver..who was a world champ until recently..and is very well known...he was in the last rocky film...and i have said for a couple of years, that calzaghe would toy with him...he wouldnt even have to train for that fight..although tarver has a rematch lined-up with chad dawson {or rumoured}, the man who beat him for his title..i am sure if a calzaghe fight was offered he would take it instead.. jermain taylor is another big name..but he would have to move to light-heavy..i cant imagine joe going back to super-middle...and taylor has a carl froch fight lined up...but he too would rather a calzaghe fight i expect.. kelly pavlik would be a no-win situation for calzaghe after hopkins beat him so convincingly.. so, there's no obvious 'big' name i dont think..
Why should Joe push his luck? Sure his career may have been expertly orchestrated. But he made money, his health is intact, and he can retire as a young man with all the money he'll ever need. On top of that, he proved to be a damn good fighter.
Bull**** so you're justifying a miss match just so Calzaghe can get one more win infront of his home fans? That isn't fair, or moral in the sport. Plus, why should he risk it against anyone. I would've liked to have seen him fight on if he could but I am still happy for him and proud of his career as it is and getting out on top.
I was expecting one more fight, maybe against a Jermain Taylor, but not overally dissapointed, Welsh fans had more than one chance to see him fight at home...
I have to agree with Mike, if people have that view of 'one more marquee fight' then it merely fuels the haters views that Joe Calzaghe is an act within a circus.
he knows whats best for him,im a fan&will miss watching him fight but good on him for bowing out when he lost his hunger, why risk that one more fight if his heart isnt in it anymore.
