Beterbiev can box and move effectively when he wants to. He might look like a brute but he's not the crude caveman plodder some will have you believe he is.

“I’m not a guy that normally leans towards a puncher,” said Ward. “I’m a guy that wants a fighter to have multiple things he can fall back on in case that punch doesn’t bail him out. But Beterbiev is a little bit different. I’ve called his fights, watched him, and studied him. He’s different.

“He throws his body into every punch. He’s physically a hard man, and he’s strong. He hits extremely hard, and he doesn’t even have to hit you clean. He can graze you, and you can have problems. But he’s also an underrated boxer.

“He [Beterbiev] has over 300 amateur fights, and he comes up from the Soviet system. He’s a lot better skillfully than people give him credit for him, and he’s going to be a hard guy to beat,” said Ward on Beterbiev.

I like Joe Smith Jr, but this really is the gold standard of the pot calling the kettle black.

With that tempo, Beterbiev will retire with a total of 20 fights and we will never actually find out if he can dominate the division or not...

Joe Smith Jr calls someone one-dimensional :eusa_dance:

To be fair, he kinda is. But technically one of the best and adaptable one-dimensional fighters I've ever seen.
Is that really still one-dimensional one might ask.

I’m surprised he’s giving him such credit, I think Beterbiev would’ve been his kryptonite also. Imagine Ward trying to maul a man like AB :nonono

Doesn’t really matter because that one dimension he has is enough to send everyone else into another one.

Beterbiev isn't one-dimensional, but he does like to stick to doing a few things well. When he needs to adapt he does so. Even if he is one-dimensional there's nothing wrong with that if you do that one dimension better than anyone else, and no one can hang with you.

Like really Joe Smith Jr of all people is calling somebody one dimensional. It’s like Andy Ruiz calling Chris Arreola fat or Joe Joyce saying Luis Ortiz is slow. A guy who was immediately confused when Sullivan Barrera didn’t stand in front of him and play sock em boppers.

They both are one dimensional in the large part. Smith a lot of fun to watch though, love his fights.

Hes had some bad luck over the past year with injuries and Covid delays. I suspect we will see him beating that drum soon enough. Bivol will fight him, but Canelo will avoid him like the plague. He will avoid him like a VADA drug tester.

But at that level, size DOES matter. Percentage wise, the gap between a tiny 106lb fighter and another tiny 126lb fighter is bigger than the gap % gap between 160lb to Cruiserweight.

Someone like Rigo could get squashed in a street fight where Beterbiev could genuinely kill someone who is 250lb in a street fight.
