You gotta respect that. I was thinking that it could be a major hindrance to his career, but if he isn't working during his camps I think it could be a good thing. I feel like a lot of boxers when they're not in camp do jack **** and get overweight. Hopefully he isn't working during his camps though, that would be ridiculous, I also hope he thinks about going to a more high profile trainer. Robert Garcia and John David Jackson would be a good fit for him imo.
The guy is an anomaly. He came outta nowhere and is set for a title fight. The type of stuff they make movies about. He has done stuff the top 2 LHW Kings could not do to fighters who are tough and experienced.
As an American we have to support all of are big men, we really lack in that department. WE basically have Ward, Smith, and Wilder.
I think if he keeps going at this rate he'll quit, I can't imagine someone getting a million dollar purse working a labor job even for the pension or insurance. He only made 140k against Hopkins so I can see why he's still working.
He said in a interview he just likes working, keeps his mind occupied. If I were in his position i'd just focus on boxing for the next few years. Proper boxing training is exhausting. Maybe the labouring helps him build strength also. Hope to see him continue doing well.
If he's not working during camps I think it's fine. And yeah labor work definitely builds strength. I'd rather him be working than getting fat at home.
Joe Smith Jr! The Cinderella man. Got his chance while being a cherry pick by Fonfara that went HORRIBLY WRONG. Was purposely picked by Bhop for his farewell fight which also went HORRIBLY wrong. This man needs to get paid!
What kind of stuff does a union laborer actually do? Construction related labor for the most part I'm guessing?
He's still a PAYING member of local 66. Once he got his pay from Fonfara fight, you can be assured that he's turned down assignments in favor of shopping for a new truck, new I phones for the wife and kids, and refinancing his mortgage to pay it down. This BHop fight has probably set him for a good 3 yrs, pay wise at least, and he won't be taking no roof tearoffs until such time as he's back to fighting in the local shows making 3500-10K, or ready to retire to Ft Lauderdale/Pensacola or Maine depending on his lifestyle. So long as he pays his union due, his 401K is safe and he keeps his tenure. For his sake, he needs a better manager more than a better trainer. 2X in a row, his mgr sent him into fight thinking he would likely lose. Smith pulled thru, but only because Fonfara is a glass jawed fraud with middling power, and BHop has been outta the ring since he was 49 yr old. If he wants to stop packing rebar, he should look to move to main events where he can get fights vs Campillo, Cloud and he defo needs to build some hype behind Joe vs Sean in an all Irish LHW War possibly held in Boston Garden. Make a couple hundred G, and fight a few more fringe level fighters and gatekeepers while waiting on a payday vs Ward, Kovalev or Chickenson.
I think Smith awesome, he have a fun come forward style with good power, seems like a nice guy in interviews, he's a real life Cinderella Man, I hope he continues to upset big names!
Joe Smith jr legitimately won that fight no doubt about it. yes he needs new management and a carefully planned career. I wish him all the luck in the world he's my type of fighter Go get em Joe
