Man he had some sick ass moves

After watching him fight Charles and that breakdown of him, I got to reading about him and he had some crazy life, 6 children, a heavyweight contender relying on relief checks and working in construction? Times really have changed. Imagine seeing Dillian Whyte at the local pub doing the scaffolding lol. He came in for fights with ATGs underprepared and not fully fit.
He has imo the number 1 Defence at HW and top 3 footwork ever, if had Holmes jab and a bit of Height he'd of been almost unbeatable but even so he managed to set a record and amassed a great résumé, beating

    Ezzard Charles 2*
    Joey Maxim 2*
    Elmer Ray 2*
    Jimmy Bivins
    Curtis Sheppard 2*
    Harold Johnson

He also might be deserved of a win over Joe Louis

If his defense was so good why did he get clipped 6 times?

He had a lot of fancy footwork that didn't seem quite worth the calories burned. Superfluous effort. Maybe with a more sound and efficient approach he would have been fresher in later rounds, especially as he aged.

I see an elite journeyman who stuck around long enough for the tide to recede and declare him the highest and driest among the leftovers.

I'd hardly call someone who outboxed Louis and Charles a journeyman, regardless of losses

Aged and depleted versions of those two. Again, the waters of the division receded and Walcott remained stationary. By contrast it appeared that he had risen.

And I did say he was an elite journeyman. But journeyman all the same.

Marciano Walcott I was one of the best heavyweight fights of all time and in of itself is sufficient proof that Walcott was an elite fighter, not an "elite journeyman."

That is great! You know a lot for yr age. Keep up the good work and never stop learning. It is outstanding to see a 15 interested in boxings deep history. I cant even tell you the last time I met a 15yr old who even watched boxing. Much less even knew who Ali was even much less a Greb or Monzon. Good luck kid. Don't let the negativity on here (& I am a negativity king) ruin the sport for you. The history of boxing is deep and filled with great storiesof tough, interesting people.

this is of course precisely right, wins and 'competitive' losses equally measure a fighter.

all these stupid impossible lists make me laugh, changed every other month as well.

it's impossible to accurately place any Top fighters in a definitive ranking outside the real exceptions like the Peps and Rays and Grebs and Armstrongs and Louis'... all the other Great and Top fighters are AMONG the Best and Greatest of All-time. Simple

and JJW is indeed that, One of Them!!!

jersey joe Walcott certainly had a very sophisticated understanding of boxing, developing methods of landing clean shots in such an advanced way. Always superbly conditioned on the film we have of him. He probably could have made a great trainer had he wanted to be one.

I think his style is a culmination of having been an excellent physical specimen to start with, a dedicated athlete who Was able to be in the sport for a very long time, and to have been creative and savvy enough to develop a system that’s that really worked for him as becoming matured.

Many ex fighters will tell you that youth is wasted on the Young, that if only they knew then what they know now they would have been better fighters. Well Jersey Joe was able to carry on with boxing when he reached that point.

To me, it is no coincidence that some of the best technical fighters took a break from boxing and were able to reflect. THen come back with a renewed outlook.

    Jimmy Braddock?

Walcott has the right ingredients to make slower or less fluid opponents look bad in Louis and Marciano. There is some genius in his style that Journeyman can only dream of. His main problem is poor judgment in the ring and a lack of a persuasive manager to guide him better on the way up.

He should be viewed as a top 40 all time heavyweight. If he was only a bit more durbale....
