Louis was shot to bits in those fights.

 

To quote Joe Louis the last fight where he said he felt like his old self was Walcott. No he was not shot to bits, Louis had problems with good boxers and movers, Walcott was one of them They were both the same age, 33 for the first fight.

 

Please dont ask him what that says about Marciano. I can only take but so much abuse of my hero.

How was 34 y/o Louis shot to bits? There was a few years of inactivity for the army but Louis boxed like a million rounds in the form of exhibitions

He surely didnt show any rust when he came back. I mark Louis as only slightly-past-prime for the walcott fights

 

I think he was visibly poorer compared to earlier fights, even ones where he had trouble.

I think it was more mileage, plus it seems he had brain damage.

He was still a good fighter because it was Joe Louis, and Walcott deserves credit, but I don't think he'd have half the success if it was a prime Louis.

Also perhaps he looked visibly poorer because Walcott's defense and timing were creating all sorts of problems for the usually sharp Louis. Not saying Louis wasnt a bit rust worn, a bit slower. But shot to hell? Really man?

 

It's a logic question. If Walcott was a journeyman in his book, how did he do so well vs Louis and Maricano?

In a 12 round setting, under the ten point must system, he beats BOTH.

If you take his peak as being the Schmeling rematch, then this is 9.5 years later. How long can any fighter stay at the top? There was talk of him slowing before the first Conn fight.

 

Most fighters have a 3-5 year peak. Louis's was a little longer IMO. Again, I don't think he was prime for the Walcott fight. Just quality.

Didn't know about the brain damage thing. That being said he seemed fine later on in life.

 

I agree Louis was still a quality fighter at that stage, I just think he was a whole other level in his prime.

 

Nah I think it’s something much more simple.

Seamus alleges that he was some sort of athletic star before becoming a frequent sh1t talker on this site. Whenever someone says that a fighter produced some athletic feat Seamus is right there saying that it isn’t that impressive or he could have done better in his pomp.

So seeing that a short, stocky white dude, who is nobodies idea of an athletic specimen attained the pinnacle of his chosen profession when I’m tipping Seamus couldn’t and didn’t has him falling victim to the basest of emotions of pure jealousy.

I know I’m playing amateur psychologist here but based on reading his drivel about Rocky (and to a lesser extent Dempsey) over the years this seems a likely explanation.

I actually feel sorry for him. Imagine dedicating your life, pouring buckets of sweat to reach the peak of your chosen sport and failing miserably. Then along comes this short armed Italian who succeeds where you couldn’t, is remembered when you’re forgotten, is revered when nobody (and I mean nobody) could give two ****s about you. What else is left to do but belittle, besmirch and disparage this winner when you were a loser?

Thats my take but if Seamus wants to post his achievements (verifiable of course) then I’ll gladly take back my opinion of him being just a bitter, jealous hack.
