Adilbek Niyazymbetov of host nation Kazakhstan just advanced by defeating Oybek Mamazulunov of Uzbekistan, dropping him in round three of a thriller.

 

Here we go!

 

This is the first AIBA World Championship to be conducted under the more professional style rule set. No headgear, results determined by # of rounds taken (scored using the familiar 10-point must system) rather than # of individual touch-points scored, etc.

 

Round 1

Ward is slipping the jab of Peraza by ducking low and to his side. Sweeping right hooks by Ward, threatening Peraza into moving backward, following with the hard left hand and coming up short. Peraza keeps peppering Ward with the left jab darting in and out. Slow, feeling out round.

All three judges gave it 10-9 to Peraza.

 

Round 2

Peraza is putting his 1-2 in through Ward's right hook and left hand combinations. Peraza is using very smooth head movement while circling on the balls of his feet, very well balanced, trickling in the long left jab and dropping in rights on the waistline of Ward. Hard power leads by Ward, thrown crisply and fluidly in combination but unable to find the mark.

All three judges have it 10-9 to Peraza and 20-18 Peraza altogether.

 

Round 3

Peraza is on his bike, leaning back and throwing pot shots with double jabs and right hands before jerking outside with his arms down and chin up in the air, mocking Ward as he leads with the right hook and brings the left fist down like a hammer behind it. Peraza is slipping nearly everything Ward throws. Ward is looking to cut the ring down, hopping to either side to keep up with Peraza's airy fluttering around the very large ring. NICE counter right hand by Peraza thrown while leaned deeply to his right to slip a Ward hook, while still tiptoeing rightward on bent knees.

All three judges (Algerian, Vietnamese, and Puerto Rican) have it 10-9 to Peraza and 30-27 to Peraza altogether.


The champ advances to a finals berth to meet Adilbek Niyazymbetov.

Semifinal #1

Roberto Cammarelle vs. Magomedrasul Medzhidov, 3 rounds @ super heavyweight

 

Round 1

Cammarelle is lifting his right from below his chest to jab Medzhidov on the face and swinging the left hand up and over while turning left and backing out. Huge right hand by Medzhidov, flush on the nose. Cammarelle takes it well. Cammarelle is carefully staying at mid-range, putting in jabs and overhand lefts without much snap, just enough to hold Medzhidov at bay. HUGE RIGHT HAND BY MEDZHIDOV!! Cammarelle is knocked on his ass. He shakes it off and beats the count. Half a minute left. Cammarelle keeps changing directions with his right arm extended to push at Medzhidov with a suspended-animation jab.

Cammarelle looked as though he didn't know a human being could hit like that. :!:

These guys have fought before, too. (of course, without the headgear...and Cammarelle has been at it a long time, so he may have aged overnight since getting robbed of gold at last year's Olympics)
