i think calzaghe gets more criticism than he should from US fans more because of his style rather than his national origins (altho that factors too). but obviously he's great at what he does.
you ***** And now, when the **** who has been moaning about not being able to get the best fights out there all his career, only now, when his options are limitless, he wants to fight an old shot man because his moronic Welsh dumbass fans will lap it up and claim he was better than RJJ himself. Calzaghe has really pissed me off by going after Jones. He knows Jones is way past it and Joe just wants the money. Pavlik, then Dawson, then retire, and he is a legend. As it stands, he simply did not prove how good he really was. If he fights Jones then retires, I hope he is forgotten about in a month. And of course Americans recognise legends that are not American. Lennox Lewis for example. He proved his doubters wrong by going to America, and fighting the very best throughout his career. Calzaghe stayed at home and fought unknown bums.[/quote]
In the last few years Joe has been chasing fights with Jones, Taylor and Hopkins. All declined to fight him,(despite being offered a small fortune) until Hopkins finally agreed. Where a fighter fights the majority of his career is irrelevant. Many Americans legends have never fought outside the USA and no one questions their greatness
Sorry I hurt your feelings. I take it Daddy let you stay up late and watch the Welsh Boxer fight the big nasty Black American.
I would tend to agree. I think you guys have a more cohesive and supportive boxing fan base. The US as a whole has a schizoid mentality when it comes to boxers. Fighters that play the bad-guy card like Hopkins and Mayweather actually seem to do better with the public in terms of getting them in the seats. Americans more often than one would think go to fights to see someone get knocked off their high horse and like to see someone playing the villain.
Why would an American fighter fight outside of America? Besides it's not just a matter of location it's a matter of resume.
i agree aaran goes way over the top. he is the uk version of toopretty etc etc. it spoils the board IMO.
because he never destroyed a prime very good fighter, so therefore he has waited to late to become great unless he wants to hang around for 5 more years and defeat the best out there.
Its a shame that those 14k fans generate more money than the 60k in your arenas. Actually its the opposite of your second statement...Fighters want to fight in Vegas b/c of the money, so are you saying the fighters aren't about boxing??? Tourism is generated from the fans...So they don't want to watch the match???
in this particular instance the casino lost a lot of money running into millions on the promotion , DLH actually having to give back money as a good will gesture and the fight was a huge loss financially.
he won't be a legend if he fights rjj. But hopkins was ranked no.1 light heavy so why fight an old RJJ. Pavlik for next fight, but noooo stupid FW won't let this happen.
Why is it you never hear anyone but British fans ***** about how underrated Joe Calzaghe is and if he was American he would be no.1 P4P all time, blah blah blah..... Why is it you think there is a massive conspiracy against British fighters and British fighters alone? Anyone look at a P4P list lately? There are 3 Americans on it. 3. There are plenty of foreigners who are regarded as great fighters. No one on this board bitches as much as Calzaghe fans.
Nope. While I'm uncertain how he will ultimately be viewed by future historians, I can confidently say one needn't be born in the US to be considered an all-time great. Look no further than Lennox Lewis.
