i think he is a modern day example of the mcguigan, one of the guys which i think is the lowest bar of a hall of fame career. even though it's understandable. lineal champion, multi wieght champion and did significant thing for the sport of boxing (suing the wbc and the cuban invasion)
If you actually look at the standard of the HOF it's generally not very high. People complain about McGuigan and Norton but there were pretty much gatekeeper types from the 20s given a pass into it too Casa was 1 of the best of his era from 130-135, he should be in, he arguably didn't lose until he was way past his prime Both should get in
I agree. My own HOF standard would be: Were you great, and did you matter? Joel Casamayor was great. He was a lineal champion, and a multiple time titlist at 130/135. He has signature wins. And he did matter. He made an impact. He proved Acelino Freitas mortal. He was robbed atleast once in a major fight. He was the vanguard of the Cubans making a mark on pro boxing. And he helped write the book on the slick left hander of modern boxing.
Thru his first 12 years of his pro career Casamayor went 36-3-1 but you can make a case that he should have went undefeated. The loss to Freitas was by 2 points on all the scorecards. The losses to Corrales and Castillo were by SD. He knocked out Corrales once and decisioned him. He only fought Castillo once. He couldn't get a rematch with Freitas. He was stopped by JMM (LKOby11) in his 41st fight but did more than hold his own thru the first 10 rounds. He went 11-5 in World title fights at JLW, LW, and JWW... 3 of those losses were questionable, the other 2 were 12 and 15 years into his career. He also beat Nate Campbell, Roberto Garcia, Daniel Seda, Michale Katsidis, and others.
Here's the thing, Casamayor boosters always talk about how many times he was robbed. For my money he beats Freitas without the BS deductions and he also managed a draw against JLC. That sucks for him. But lets not pretend Casamayor was some huge victim. The gy got a big gift over Kid DIamond, and one of the words decisions of all time against Jose Armando Santa Cruz. And the guy could have done a lot to help his own case if he had just thrown a few more punches in a handful of rounds in his career.
