How highly was Calzaghe rated by American fans in 2004, and how highly is he rated now?

The argument that a win over Dawson isn't important cause American fans will once again not give Calzaghe credit for that win doesn't have any credibility. If you look at the situation, Calzaghe has gotten a ton of credit from American fans compared to before 2005, whether they admit it or not

Joe won 7 of the final 8 rounds on two judges' cards; he controlled the fight after the 4th round.

Joe landed more punches on Hopkins than any other previous Hopkins opponent.

Hopkins used his head, faked low blows, exaggerated a borderline low blow, bitched about supposed hits to the back of his head and did anything he possibly could to try to slow down the whirlwind that wouldn't let him rest. Bernard was reduced to one-punch-and-grab methods, and got schooled and made to look like a shot fighter, unlike how he looked against Pavlik.

Hopkins 4 times went to the wrong corner at the ends of rounds against Calzaghe, bringing former trainer Freddie Roach to worry about BHop's continuing in the fight game.

Bernard is older now than the first fight.

Seriously, how badly do you want to see Hopkins humiliated? The only difference between a second fight and the first would be that Joe wouldn't need any time to adapt to Hopkins' style. Do you want to see Hopkins get "Pavliked" against Joe?

 

That's why I say Calzaghe and Delahoya are the same type of boxing champion. Woefully thin in terms of backbone and character, superlatively thick when it comes to money and ego, thinking of only themselves and not the fans.

Oscar was an outstanding fighter, but not one who was at Joe's level. There are no Felix Strum debacles on Joe's ledger, or KO loses, either.

 

This is why I'll keep my mouth open for guys like you who just plainly can't see anything. No disrespect though. C'mom man, Ali fought Frazier three times, Norton three times, Quarry twice, Liston twice, Chuvalo twice, Patterson twice and put himself in much more danger against all punchers and all styles compared to Delahoya. I'm not a big supporter of Ali because I think he got gifts just like Delahoya. I still appreciate him much more because at least he had the guts to climb back into the ring against the top competion and tried to at least appease the fans who wanted to see rematches. This is something Delahoya has never done, except for Mosely. Delahoya's greatness is not even comparable to that of Ali or any other dominant champion before him. The exact same thing can and should be said for Joe Calzaghe. He hasn't done anything to warrant a higher standing as an all time great.

 

Joe has a good resume (if people actually take the time to examine it) yeah its not great, but its fairly strong. De La Hoya has never ducked anyone and his resume is great. Its kind of pointless comparing either to Ali though, how many boxers resume's would compare well with Ali's? One or two at most.

 

Delahoya has DUCKED rematches to eradicate controversial decisions.
How can any serious Delahoya fan say they are proud of their fighter who barely escaped decisions vs Quartey, Whitaker and Sturm.
The commentary after the Quartey fight is cowardly and shameful.
Marvin Hagler avenged quite of few of the decisions that he felt weren't satisfactory. Delahoya has never done that. The Whitaker, Quartey and Sturm decisions rank just as high as Lewis vs Holyfield I.

Oscar would never get my vote for the HOF with this much controversial unfinished business.

 

There are some fans who are clueless and go way over the top but don't tar us all with the same brush.

I am a Calzaghe fan and you are right about Ali. Ali > Calzaghe.

 

So Hopkins fantastic performance against Pavlik warrants a rematch vs. Calz? Hopkins does not deserve it. Why on earth would Calzaghe want to fight a guy again that had to resort to faking phantom groin shots when he started to get dominated?
