Not someone I'm very familiar with, but he looks really good. His balance, form, speed, agility, sharp punching. Good post, Hanza killed it with this one.
One of the smoothest operators ive watched on film. The Graham fight I just watched (2nd) is a master class of boxing skill. Great fighter!
I heard or read him described as 'slick as an ice cube with ****'. Seemed a really nice fellow to boot. I would have loved to see some of those 50s, 60s fighters like Joey or Billy Graham competing in a modern era. Proper cuties. I wonder how GGG would fare against this level of boxing acumen. We'd certainly find out a lot more about him.
It was Giardello, along with Tiger, Griffith, Harada and Jofre who got me hooked on boxing. My dad used to buy me Ring and Boxing Illustrated and I was fascinated with the Giardello-Tiger rivalry in '64 and '65...it was boxer vs slugger basically,...but way back then I could only go on the magazine reports...wish I could have seen Giardello-Tiger 3 & 4 back then.
He sure was Robert. My dad, uncle, aunt and grandmother were all addicts of the Friday Night Fights back in the 50's....they drank beer and watched the fights (like all healthy Americans did back then)...and my grandmother's favorite was Joey Giardello...she once told me that she had a crush on him "that handsome devil"
Rez, Giardello was a graduate of the "school of hard knocks",...and that's how he earned that degree in boxing wizardry.
Why the Giardello vs Hurricane Carter title fight controversy? Looks like legit similar scores by 2 judges and a referee: Middleweight Contest, 15 rounds 72.00 for Joey G. Bob Polis referee 66.00 for H Carter judges scorecard 71.00 for JG Jim Mina 66.00 for HC 70.00 for JG Dave Beloff 67.00 for HC
The bald head, the Fu Manchu mustache and the gleaming big muscles influenced the makers of that dreadful film "Hurricane" and all those foolish enough to believe that Carter was robbed, but in reality, the old wizard Joey Giardello outfoxed and out finessed him all night.
