Anyone think Giardello could possibly beat Hagler? at least give him a run for his money? Giardello might be one of the most underrated champs from that era.
Joey was not the most dedicated of gym workers ,but if he was in shape, I think he would take one out of a trilogy with Marvin. He was a cagey boxer puncher with decent right hand power.
Giardello took 2 out of 4 from Dick Tiger , was probably badly served in a draw with Fullmer, and beat Carter,I don't see Hagler bullying him .
I thought Carter bullied him, but haven't seen the other fights tbf. Tiger is perhaps the most comparable opponent without the southpaw angle and jab, not quite as quick either
Giardello beat Carter . Tiger was stronger that Hagler, and so was Fullmer. Hagler, when he met a strong opponent ,reverted to boxer mode, eg Briscoe. Hagler could not bully Duran, Antuofermo, Roldan ,or Hamsho ,none of whom were anywhere near Giardello's class at middle.
Wel said mcvey:thumbsup..all i need to add is that Giardello was one of those old school wizards who got his boxing degree from the School of Hard Knocks..was basically not afraid or intimidated by anyone and plied his trade like a master when he was in shape...and I'm sure he would have deemed Hagler as a guy to be in his best shape for. His performances against Tiger (III) and Carter were master class displays of that wizardry of his.
I consider Hagler right after Monzon in the annals of great middleweight champions..with Greb hovering right up there somewhere, but Giardello was capable of either nicking Hagler on his best night, or at the very least, just losing a closely contested 15 rounder. Like it was said in an earlier post, there may well have been a trilogy between Joey and Marv..most likely with Giardello taking 1.
Giardello was a skilled boxer puncher from what I can see. Hagler would have to go to the trenches to defeat Joey. Seeing how inconsistent Hagler was, Giardello might be able to nick a decision over Hagler.
Giardello at best eeked out a decision against Carter, for allot of the fight he was bullied against the ropes taking the harder shots. There's a genuine case for Carter beating Giardello and yes I've seen the fight and am not basing it on the movie. Hagler is a level above Carter/Fullmer and probably Tiger for that matter
