This is a perfect style matchup for Hearns, he’d outjab him with that sharp, well schooled jab and would keep him honest with the occasional right hand straight, not that he’d need to as Maxim was a negative sort of fighter anyway, he didn’t really impose his size much. the well schooled Hearns is able to outbox him and Maxim wouldn’t use his physical advantages.
I like this one for Hearns too. Tommy wouldn't face any danger as such here, he'd get him self a nice decision. Only thing is,in his next fight he'd be meeting Archie Moore
For the reasons Robinson *beat* Maxim Hearne likely does to, though he’d have a harder time because he was not Robison and Maxim was not Virgil Hill.
Even though Joey Maxim was tough as nails I still have to favor Thomas Hearns. I know 175 wasn’t Tommy’s best weight but he proved he could fight there and his skill level was just much higher. Tommy would need a decision and I think he could do it
True. Tommy Hearns was not Ray Robinson. But nor did Robinson fight maxim under ideal circumstances. Ray showed up at 157 lbs to Maxims 173. He also had about 140 fights of mileage behind him when that fight took place. Additionally the heat was so bad that day that even the referee had to be replaced after the tenth round. And being the smaller man, Ray naturally had to work harder to overcome the difference. Despite all this, Robinson was winning. Now take Hearns who matched Maxim at 6’1” in height but had a 78” reach to Joey’s 71 inches. Wouldn’t have as much mileage. And hopefully fighting under more humane circumstances than record high heat. Might not be as hard for him as it was for Ray
Maxim was a big Lhthvy and went 15 rounds often. Hearns aint knocking him out, I'll take Maxim to outlast him. Hearns had his problems going the distance with bigger stronger guys, although Hearns might be favored here.
Even with that in mind I’m sort of seeing @surfinghb ’s point here, but you do raise good points Magoo.
I honestly can't see Hearns with a chance against Maxim. Maxim was big, strong, and he knew how to wear a guy down.
Hearns by SD. Close fight but Maxim lost frequently to best he faced. He had a great chin though Hearns isn’t stopping him
A winnable fight for Hearns as Maxim was not a puncher. Tommy should be able to outbox him to a decision win.
Hearns will have to show that he can box because he isn't taking Maxim out ... and he does, wins a clear decision although not lopsided.
