Just watching some footage of Joey..... He really looks good with his defensive skills, great jab (very underrated jab IMO)... Just wondering what´s the opinion on him here...... He impresses you on film ?? What do you have to say about him.....:good This content is protected
Solid fighter. Has a chance against any light heavy outside the top 5 or so. He could be beaten a variety of ways though, so I wouldn't particularly think of him as a head to head beast.
People forget that he was extremely competitive with Charles in several of their fights, even though he did lose all five. He's no joke.
I think in three fight series he could take at least one fight against Galindez, Saad Muhammad, Eddie Mustafa, Fitz, Hill, and Hearns. I actually think he would stand an excellent chance of upseting Michael Spinks. His speed, mobility, smarts, and his overrall style would give Michael a great deal of trouble. And I'm not convinced that Spinks to replecate what Shepherd did, and which Moore, Charles, Murphy, Mills, and Robinson could not.
He fought some of the toughest guys ever around the weight. He was competitive and couldn't be taken lightly, and that's saying alot when considering his opposition.
Vic, Maxim's ultra-conservative brand of boxing would be deemed to tedious for some, especially those who are steeped in the lightheavyweight excitement and gory splendor of Matthew Saad Muhammad, Qawi, the flashy Mr Jones Jr, Michael Spinks, etc., but Maxim was extremely consistant in applying his rather negative style (think of a stiffer, more mechanical version of Jimmy Young). Joey had one hell of a chin, and was capable of punching with more pop than advertised (just ask Freddie Mills..if you can, lol) and after an early pole-axing by the brutal punching Curtis Shepard, displayed nothing short of a world class chin of steel..amplified by the staggering number of fights that he had..(staggering is an apt description compared to modern day fighters)..in his losses, he comported himself rather well vs Charles, Moore, et al and i would say his record speaks for itself. 9
