Definitely one that could go either way, but the smart money would be on Layne at his best. He had a track record of beating brilliant boxers with pressure and aggression, and Maxim didn't have the power to keep him honest.
I don’t think Layne is KOing Mr Maxim he had a serious chin and a good defence…. he was stopped once by his eras Earnie Shavers in a freak occurrence.
I don’t think either are historic “greats” but very, very good fighters - more Maxim then Layne…. I believe Maxim fought more HOFers and contenders than nearly anyone right? I read something like that somewhere…. But if you look at who he fought he must be one of the most “seasoned” fighters of all time.
I’ll go with Maxim here. He was better than the sum of his parts and generally was able to elevate his game (at least to a certain level).
Layne in top form could take it, but I'd have to favor Maxim, who at his best was very good at absorbing the best his opponents could give at either light heavyweight or heavyweight only to go home with the decision.
Something only accomplished once,in116 fights ,by Hatchet Man Sheppard whom Maxim beat 3 times. Bivins Walcott Tandberg Scott Walker Anderson Nardico Oma Burman Muscato Sheppard Satterfield All lost to Joey, yet Layne is going to ko him? Walcott x2 Charles x2 Satterfield Sheppard x3 Moore x3 Murphy Nardico Couldnt stop Maxim. Who exactly did Layne ko?
