Johansson turned it down $100K to fight Ali in 1961 saying this:

    Ingo did
You haven't been paying attention, Rocky.

Ingo didn't relish the prospect of being embarrassed.

Speaking of age perception from a younger vantage point - a lyric in Ed Sheehan’s Thinking Out Loud (and maybe he shouldn’t have - think out loud that is, lol) makes me laugh.

“And darling, I’ll be loving you til we’re 70”.

What happens then Ed, do you just stop loving her?

Or, is that the preset age when she ceases to be, like a replicant from Blade Runner?

Maybe at 70, old Ed does the runner or personally wheels his Mrs to the nearest nursing home. Perhaps he even slips her some arsenic to move things along?

Possible motives and exit strategies abound. I mean, you are virtually at deaths door anyway when you hit 70, right?

What happened to the beautifully expressed use by date: “Until the 12th of never...”

    C’mon kids, whaddup?

I have to say that my sympathies are firmly with Johansen here.

The man didn't have a crystal ball.

At this point he was a former undisputed champion, and Ali's professional fights could be counted on the fingers on one hand.

Johansen would have been criticized for taking this fight at the time, and quite rightly so.

Well, IF the 100k was guaranteed, why would Ingo bother suggesting a lack of interest/$$$ - moot point, really?

Sounds similar to Jeffries deflective claim that a bout between he and 1902-1904 Johnson wouldn’t draw flies - okay Jeff, but you would ultimately draw the colour line anyway...you’re talking ****.

Also, young Cassius might’ve been interpreted as a seasoned pro compared to one Pete Rademacher.

Rep. wise, a sort of lose lose for Ingo. If he polished young Cass off, how much would he stand to gain vs the potential demerit points doing it tough against or even losing to a green pro with a handful of fights?

Whether young Ali was better than Ingo or not as at the time, it was still only sparring and not unreasonable to think that Ingo wasn’t going balls to the wall - while Ali himself saw an opportunity to shine.

In fact, I think I read that Dundee requested Ingo and/or his team not to throw anything too serious at his young charge.

If I come across the related quote(s) again I’ll try to remember to link same to this thread.

One last unbiased opinion on departure - Ingo has, and will always be, The Thinking Man’s GOAT..., true, it requires a good deal of thinking but it will eventually come to you.

    Hope not !

If true, my time is almost up.

And others, such as @FrankinDallas and @Jason Thomas are already being hunted down by Blade Runners and Sandmen.

I am 49 years old, but I know that Douglas Mac Arthur said: "I should return".
Watch now...I know that Galileo Galilei said: "And yet it moves", I also know that Gaius Julius Caesar said: "The die is cast".

    He said, "I shall return."

    Yes, love that quote.

    Up yours, Bishops !

    True.

But he never said " Et tu,Brute ?"

It was Liam Shakespeare who said that.

    Still we don't really know.

He might well have said "Brute ? Vos tergum-confossis kunt !"

    (Brutus ? You back-stabbing kunt)

To be fair, Moore was almost 50 years old (that would be ancient even by 2023 standards)

That wasn't the Moore that beat Maxim or Johnson

Ferg - we must have some ageless, blood sucking vampires posting among us.

Ah, the things they’ve must’ve seen and can still tell us mere mortals about!

I actually like “I should return”. It’s nicely loaded.

Puts a twist on the original meaning - as if to say “I should return...but hey, **** it, I’m not bothered to”.

I also like “Liam” Shakespeare, the Old Bard*stard.

As an aside (and didn’t “Liam” love those?) - his works are a bit overrated though.

Apparently, given an infinite number of attempts, chimps could also eventually type out all of his stuff.

I haven’t heard that. So they think she’s “fake news”? I guess it would take a Miracle Worker to educate them.

Speaking of whom (Helen that is), go to 2:10 for a nice shout out to Ms Keller.

Listen up kiddies, this is REAL music (tbh, I do like this tune).
