Beautiful fighter to watch. Just such a smooth, balanced fighter.
I'm no expert on Conteh, though I've watched probably every fight of his available on YouTube.
Great appreciation thread. Also nice of you to mention MDWC, who I miss.

The second Saad fight was a complete whitewash. Conteh came in like a man walking to the gallows and MSM just walked through him. Conteh put up feeble resistance but didn’t seem to really get hit hard enough to justify getting bounced around like he did — I think he knew he couldn’t replicate his first performance, much less improve upon it, so showed up to collect a paycheck or maybe see if he could get lucky … and when Saad started swinging he realized he wanted no part.

It’s a very disappointing effort on John’s part.

I really thought that John Conteh was on his way to regaining the WBC Title, he was befuddling the great Matthew Saad Muhammad for 14 rounds until the knockdown. It as all political that John Conteh was stripped of his WBC Title on May 21 1977 for refusing to defend his title against mandatory challenger Miguel Angel Cuello, of Argentina, in Monte Carlo, Monaco. Cuello stopped Jesse Burnett in round 9 to claim the vacant title.
