    John Conteh of 1974 vs Saul Canelo Alvarez of the Kovolov bout, 175 lbs, 15 rounds. Could Canelo overpower John? Would Conteh simply outbox Alvarez?

    Alvarez's whole 175 resume is shot Krusher. Prime Conteh is a level above Alvarez at lightheavy and wins a convincing decision.

    This match would potentially look like the vacant WBC title bout between John Conteh vs Jorge Ahumada, which Conteh won on points on Oct 1 1974 in London, England. Canelo Alvarez would be the aggressor throughout the contest, only to be counterpunched by Conteh. Alvarez would be wobbled on many an occasion. John Conteh is the winner, unanimously in 15 rounds.

    That's how I have it too. I've said it before and I'll say it again - If John's hands had remained injury free and he'd stayed clear of "out of the ring distractions" we'd be talking about him in the same breath as other175 lb men such as Michael Spinks and Bob Foster. John was that talented.

    Yes, he was. And he had that mean streak as well.

    Against a peak Conteh, if you couldn't at least match his reach, you might as well stay in the dressing room. I really don't see how Alvarez avoids walking on to counters and one-twos all night.
    I'm sure Canelo's work rate and appetite for a fight would keep John honest but it's a pretty clear decision for Conteh with Canelo carrying lumps and bumps.

    Definitely Conteh on any reasonable scorecard and that’s with Canelo’s PED’s still.

    Conteh beat the following ranked lhv's;
    Finnegan
    Schmidtke
    Bogs
    Ahumada
    Lopez
    And very good ones like Taylor ,Bennett,Rondon .
    He gave Saad Muhammad a very tough fight .Saad getting away with an illegal substance to close a bad gash on his eye. He beats Alvarez ,whom I think is underated at160lbs, and largely unproven at 175lbs.

    I do agree that John Conteh beats Canelo Alvarez. Conteh was a very good champion, enjoyed watching him fight.
