I like Qawi..... Conteh was the better overall boxer, but I'm not sure he had the fire power to keep Qawi off of him for 15 rds... I gotta go with "Alimighty" Dwight M. Qawi in this encounter at 175 pounds... MR.BILL
Sounds quite a good call,MR.BILL. I reckon a peak Conteh would have beaten Saad Muhammad, but the former Mr Braxton may have been all wrong for him.
Qawi really was only tamed in his prime by an equally primed Michael Spinks who was a wicked-ass puncher at 175 pounds in 1983.... Other than that, nobody else could beat Qawi at 175 during that time.... Qawi was great... Qawi was still good / great at 190 pounds all the way up to his 1986 war with a green Evander Holyfield... 1987 was the year Qawi began to slip / fade as a fighter... By March 1988, a comebacking 222 pound Qawi was being battered by a 235 pound George Foreman... MR.BILL
I like Conteh, Albeit he cant afford to try any rough stuff with the Buzzsaw, Against Boxers, who didnt confront Him Dwight did encounter problems, Johnny Davis hinted at this, Superman Scott fought (Ran) off the back foot and Dwights effectiveness was much reduced, and Spinks used threat and Movement to beat Dwight, so Conteh, at his best, in Boxer mode i think can stay a half-step ahead of the Buzzsaw, in London certainly.
I like Qawi, but it'd be close. Conteh was plenty resilient in his prime and showed that he could deal with strong, bullish fighters (Ahumada in particular stands out).
I like Qawi....but as strange as this sounds, I think a one handed Conteh with his left jab would do better against Qawi than the aggressive, two handed John would...the reason being is that Conteh would limit his exchanges with Dwight...if Conteh were to box Qawi like he did against Yaqui Lopez, he would give Qawi absolute fits...Qawi by close controversial decision...
I agree.I've nothing but respect for John and am a fan,but the Camden Buzzsaw might be the toughest 175er I've ever seen.
Funny how we can perceive things so differently.I've always thought he was more spiteful frontrunner than a genuinely tough no-bull**** type....more Benn than Basilio mentally (unless you're just meaning durability by toughness).A great "on-top" fighter but that's a big part of why he didn't have a better career than he did imo.
Conteh was a skilled fighter but he partied way too hard and had brittle hands ... he was never a big puncher to begin with ... a skilled boxer ... at 175 to beat Qwai you needed crushing power or the threat of it to keep him off you ... Spinks did the trick because he had the size and the power and even then he fought the fight of his life and ran all night ... Conteh and Galindez , champs at the same time at 175, remind me of Palimino and Cievas, champs of a same time at the same weight ... all were very good fighters and enjoyed success but all were followed by a group of fighters that were a class above .. The best Conteh or Galindez do not stand up to the best Saad/Mustafa/Qwai/JOhnson or Spinks to me just like the best Palimino/Cievas did not stand up to the best Leonard/Hearns/Benitez/Duran ...
