John Conteh v Joe Calzaghe

Calzaghe was two fited compared to Conteh who wouldn`t have thrown enough hands to beat Joe also Joe would have landed far more on Saad Muhammad than Conteh did in his two losses to Muhammad.

 

I think Conteh would have decimated him.

 

The Pride of Wales far too good in my opinion - very underrated on here and hated by Tony Troll because he was a Warden fighter.

It is frightening to think how good Joe was considering he fought his entire career with busted hands.

One of the UK's finest ever along with the Gypsy King.

 

Calzaghe wins for me and wins easy. He's enormously underrated due to his dismal CV. In his prime he should have been widely acknowledged as the best in the world and I genuinely mean that. A crying shame that his career was wasted for so long.

Those top five videos on here made it all the more clear when the Calzaghe greatest five fights featured him against Mario Veit.

 

Joe for me

 

Veit himself was an underrated fighter. Very decent solid technical fighter. Joe should have had bigger fights but Veit was a good boxer in his own right. Elite? no, but gave me people he fought a good contest it's just Joe was levels above.

 

Much as I have the greatest respect for Calzaghe, I think Conteh may have been too big for him. He was, after all, a natural Light Heavy. John was also highly adept at the darker arts of Boxing so Joe would be butted, elbowed and hit low.
Conteh on points for me.

There's not many British fighters who gets the praise and accolades from our American friends like Joe does.
Conteh, whilst very good wasnt quite as good as Joe.

 

Conteh had terrible hand trouble Jürgen. Just saying.

 

If Joe is underrated, does anyone else think conteh is overrated?

A good fighter but not elite.

 

Conteh was one of the first British boxers to try and go it alone having benefited from the Duff/Barrett/Levine/Astaire syndicate. that meant leaving Trainer George Francis which drastically caused problems particularly around hand wrapping . He broke his right hand in a subsequent defence and was never the same when he fought Saad Muhammad he fought one handed. Always difficult to rate fighters of different eras from a purist boxing perspective the Conteh that won the title against Ahumada was top notch. Calzaghe whilst not so pleasing on the eye always found a way to win so very hard to bet against but I will in this case and pick Conteh.
