I've mentioned this fight on another thread recently,so I thought I'd watch it again. Still provokes the same reaction. Steam was coming out of my ears. In my eyes John won at least nine rounds. Okay I'm a fan of his. He's probably my second all time favourite boxer (after Ali) but I can still judge a bout objectively. I'd like to know what My Dinner With thinks of this one.
You're well within your right to be pissed off Stevie. Conteh was jobbed. My card for what it's worth: John Conteh vs. Mate Parlov: 144-140 Conteh Parlov: 1,2,4,8 and 9. Conteh: 3,5,6,7,10,11,12,13 and 14. Round 15 even ( 9-9 ).
I've seen this fight but it's one of John's that I don't own. I think it was a close contest actually, taking into account the points that John was deducted (if I remember correctly). Parlov started well and opened a big lead that Conteh closed in the second half of the fight when he attacked the body a bit more, setting up the cleaner head-shots he had trouble with earlier. I don't think a draw was out of the question to be honest.
If i remember correctly the Ref later revealed that he had Conteh 6 points ahead ! the UK trade paper headlined its issue "Robbery" !! and as i recall the scorecards were not read out after the fight ! Parlov's Hand was simply lifted, And Parlov was away buzy being mobbed by his stadium full of fans, with Conteh and his Corner looking disappointed bemused and wishing to be some place else, It certaibnly looked to me that whilst Mate's more Ametuer Fiddle-Faddle had caused John some Early Problems, Contehs more aggressive Pro Approach seemed to carry the fight down the Stretch, I guess it was one of those fights there the Local Hero's Flicking Jab was given as much reward as the Challengers Vicious Body shot ? It might have taken a brave judge to pick against Mate in that stadium ? I think Conteh was worth a close win.
Just seen it on Flea's youtube channel. 14th round was missing however. Conteh was very unlucky, I didn't score the fight but then I didn't need to as Contehs late rally should've been enough to score a clear win. Good scrap though.
I'll get the complete fight soon and replace it, didn't realise my version had 14th round missing 'til rewatching it.
Mentioned this in an earlier discussion.Saw it on TV and although a long time ago definitely remember thinking Conteh was robbed.Also think Parlov was a good boxer and underrated.What a great boxer Conteh was,he had everything.Could have been all time.Is he a hall of famer?If not,he should be.
