One of the greatest British light heavy s against the hard hitting Southpaw. I see John building up a points lead, using Moorer aggression against him and getting a unanimous decision.
Certainly a plausible outcome. Moorer wasn’t all that proven at light heavy. The best fighter he beat there was Leslie Stewart who was leading on the cards through eight rounds before Moorer finally got a stoppage win.
John at his peak was a tremendous fighter but unfortunately due to various reasons it didn`t last long.Moorer was a very good champion and feel overall had a better career than John. But as to who wins i am very much undecided
Conteh at his best was very good,,I could see him taking a UD although I wouldn't be extremely confident
Moorer struggled with an ancient Leslie Stewart in his only real test in his brief run at Light Heavy, when he was still a pup in pro boxing terms. Yes, he was fun and exciting, but I think he would have been at best 50/50 with Harding, let alone a primed John Conteh. Moorer's bravery would dictate the length, but I take Conteh to dominate after the first few rounds.
The John Conteh from the title winning bout against Jorge Ahumada on Oct 1 1974, would prove too much for Michael Moorer. Conteh was a very good stylish counterpunching boxer with a good right hand(remember the Len Hutchins title bout in March 1977, TKO 3 victory for John with that hard right hand) Michael as mentioned by another quality poster, would use Moorer's aggressiveness against him. John, although a light heavyweight would cruise his way to a unanimous decision victory with effective counterpunching at times wobbling Michael with his snappy right hand to the southpaw's head.
I have to favor Moorer by stoppage. Conteh didn’t hold up against Matthew Saad Muhammad’s power and found an easy way out the second time around having tasted it. Heck, even Jesse Burnett knocked him down a couple of times and Burnett wasn’t exactly a monster puncher. Also southpaws Parlov and Finnegan — neither on Moorer’s level IMO — gave Conteh plenty of problems. In fact he had to head-butt his way to a win over Finnegan in the return bout. I think Conteh’s style was very fan-friendly and make people overestimate him a bit. His resume is rather thin — some people seem to argue him beating Ahumada was equal to beating prime Bob Foster, and that just isn’t the case.
With all due respect, the John Conteh you are speaking of is the older John Conteh of his stripped of title days, he beat Alvaro Yaqui Lopez by unanimous decision on Oct 18 1976. The Ahumada fight was impressive, but agree on John beating a prime Bob Foster. In his title defense days, He could have not defeated Foster. he beat quality fighters, (Lopez as previously mentioned) Len Hutchins, TKO 3, who went 11 rounds with Victor Galindez in 1974. No excuses but John suffered hand issues following his non title bout against Willie Taylor in 1975, it would plague him throughout the rest of his title reign, causing postponements. He suffered knockdowns in his post title days, Matthew Saad Muhammad on Aug 18 1979 and 1980, also Jesse Burnett too. Just adding my opinion.
No brag just fact my dear friend, I was following up on what you earlier stated regarding that hypothetical bout
No worries Richard. Hope your OK. I totally agree with what you said about John too. He had a few problem s in his life, hand problems and with his management I believe. So really we may have seen him go on even further with success. I definitely think he beats MM. A little too raw even tho he punched like crazy.
