I regard Roy Jones Jnr as the best fighter of my generation who I grew up watching. However I heard from some sources John Conteh was a really top fighter and former WBC Light Heavyweight Champion. I have even heard from some that John Conteh could have taken Roy Jones at Light Heavyweight. I have never seen Conteh fight really so I am intrested to know to those who have seen both Conteh and Jones fight what do you think would happen in a Light Heavyweight clash both at their peaks.

I'm a big fan of Conteh (hence the avatar!).

P4P Jones is a fair way ahead. At lightheavy though, I think a natural and very talented Conteh would probably have too much for Jones on a head to head basis. However, I am basing this on a prime LHW Conteh and a Jones fighting at LHW the way he has done since he beat McCallum. At LHW I think Jones has been managed quite well so he has been able to go through a long career at that weight.

As I say, P4P its no contest in Jones' favour. At LHW though, there's a few above Jones and I'd pick Conteh as one of them.

YES that is what I mean up at light heavyweight - we know Roy Jones was not even a natural light heavyweight but he was still good enough to become undisputed champion at the weight. But I heard Conteh had good power and could have hurt Roy if he got the chance

i think conteh would have been too tough for jones all round.he had good boxing skills, power and a good chin(he was shot against saad muhammad)he was also a dirty so and so.i don't think roy wins this one.

Conteh was double tough and a real good fighter , I'd fancy his chance over Jones at LH. Jones could certianlyt argue to be one of the best pound for pound of all time but at LH there are several fighters trough history I reckon take him. ( this is not meant to slag Jones off, he was a special talent ! )

Personally I haven't seen enough of John Conteh to make a accurate decision in who I would pick, but I will certainly look into it.

    :good

Just to make the point, I'm not having a go at RJJ either - one of the best of the modern generation - just at LHW there's a few names above him!

I also do think Roy was better at LHW than alot of people give him credit for because of the recent losses at that weight....I saw him slowing a bit before he ever lost there and he also moved up and won a HW belt against a guy who would smother and kill most LHW fighters.

Conteh was a British fighter as well - so I would assume he is a class above a light heavyweight like Clinton Woods who Roy Jones stopped in six rounds

I agree, there are certainly fighters at LHW that I would pick over Roy... Not in a PFP sence but because they were better at that weight and Roy simply was not his peak at that weight.... Too bad for me I haven't seen enough of Conteh to be able to discuss how I think the fight would go.

I have hardly seen enough of Conteh either cos he was before my time. But I am familar with him through when he works as a TV pundit. But I heard he was a big puncher and could have Roy in some trouble - a big natural light heavyweight from Liverpool England

I don't think a peak LHW Roy would have as much trouble with big punchers as alot of people say... He wasnt at his best, but he was really hard to hit and still had one punch ko power in both hands... I don't take beating Jones at his LHW peak lightly.

Conteh's first fight against Saad Muhammed is on youtube and definately worth a watch (although he got beat in that!).

If possible get hold of Conteh v Chris Finnegan (I) - might be too rare though, so try his fight with Yaqui Lopez or Lonnie Bennett - I know the Bennett fight is out there!

What I've seen on Conteh shows him as a hard *******, a big puncher who could box and had the work rate to overpower most fighters. RJJ might be a bit small at LH but catchweight I'd still have to fancy Roy.

Now Conteh v BHop at LH would be a fight I'd invent a time machine to see!

    Conteh would beat Jones late.
