Mark the calender, over 11 years later. McVey and Mendoza agree.

A close fight, between two classy boxer/technicians,...but Johnson, of course, was the better of the two, and would win a deserved decision over 15.

I tentatively pick Johnson ,but this post makes a very powerful argument for Conteh!

I'm going against the grain and picking Conteh. I'm his relatively short prime he was one of the best textbook boxers I've ever watched. Threw textbook punches in the manner of Arguello. A beautiful boxer to watch in his prime yrs.
I think it takes more of a pressure/grinder type to beat him at his best.

A prime Conteh (which wasn't a long stretch at all) would actually be able to win this, like RU said.

Would be a masterful left handed exchange. But I think Conteh's left is a little bit better.

Just enjoying this one. I haven't seen enough of Conteh, or Galindez really, to make a prediction.

Harold had enough science to edge Conteh in a tough fight. Probably 8-7 or 8-6-1 in rounds.

This would be a great tactical fight and two great jabs competing against each other. Although both were good tacticians, esp. Johnson, this could actually be a real banger, since both were tough and it could take a lot of slamming 2 convince each of them 2 be wary of whatever punching power they have.

I’m not sure I like this re-emergence of Conteh threads. Some laughably dismissive posts of him. This thread is an exception.

Mantequilla (as he was known before he became lora after being banned for posting wieners), Raging B(_)LL, and AREA53 making for peak classic forum discussion. Great stuff.

And of course, Mendoza showing that he was always the same poster. Never bothering to watch any of the actual fights.

I would have to go with Johnson. His resume is far too deep with victories over some of the best of his era. He also faced some big punchers who I’m sure hit harder than Conteh. I don’t see Conteh bringing anything to the fight that Charles, Moore and Bivins didn’t bring.

You are right, hat is why Matthew Saad Muhammad was forced to fight John Conteh in a rematch in 1980. The Mate Parlov fight was held in Parlov's hometown of Yugoslavia, he said that he wanted to fight Victor Galindez after getting the decision over Conteh.
