I think John would win by unanimous decision but he would have to be on point the full 15, since Marvin would give it to him. 9-6 would probably be the verdict.

With all due respect to you, I believe you are referring to the John Conteh of 1978 and 1979. My thread is the prime John Conteh who took the vacant WBC Title by beating Jorge Ahumada on Oct 1 1974 by unanimous 15 round decision vs Marvin Pops Johnson in his respective prime. Sometimes it's easy to jump off of the tracks, later Conteh had hand issues, was of course later stripped of his title on May 21 1977 for failure to meet mandatory WBC no. 1 contender Miguel Angel Cuello of Argentina in Monte Carlo, Monaco. Cuello defeated late substitute Jesse Burnett by TKO 9 to take the title. On Jan 9 1978, Mate Parlov stopped Cuello by TKO 9 to win the WBC Title. In June 1978 Parlov faced former WBC Champion John Conteh in Yugoslavia, Parlov's home turf and won a hotly disputed decision. On Dec 2 1978, Marvin Pops Johnson stopped Parlov to win the WBC Title, which later he would lose to then Matthew Franklin (Matthew Saad Muhammad) by TKO 8. Conteh was passed his prime by June 1978.

Close fight any way you cut it. I'll try to bypass my natural bias against Johnson (He was one of the coaches at Indy PAL when I boxed there as a teenager and not particularly nice or invested in any of us...) and suggest that Conteh was a different style of opponent than we saw Marvin against as he was a tricky boxer with speed and defense and I can't think of anyone that Johnson had to track down in his big fights. My guess is that Johnson would start fast and fade a little late and Conch would get a close nip on the cards for the win. I think I have more faith in Conteh's ability to edge rounds than I do Johnson's ability to break him down significantly and do lasting damage.

    Good thread, though. Hard call.
