A underrated fighter who was avoided like the plague during his prime years or obscure and not talked about for a reason? I know he was undefeated for a little more than a decade, and his chin let him down big time. He was schooling Fernando Castro just as badly as a absolute prime Terry Norris was... Until he ate a monster shot and that chin let him down. Thoughts? Thread partly inspired by John being in Hopkin's corner for the upcoming Pavlik fight.
i don't think he was under-rated. most in the know agreed he was world class and a good spoiler. and in truth, that's what he was, nothing more.
Was a good fighter...Had a short reign at lightmiddle aswell, I watch his fight with Lawlor a few years ago and I remember him looking pretty bloody good in it. Heartbreaking loss to Castro...what could have been if he hadnt got caught. Could have potentially got some big fights at middle after that with Roy still around and Gman holding a title also. He was probably nearing the end of his prime career anyway, in his early 30's by then and I think he would have been chasing those fights. Not fights I think he would have won but they would have been good for his bank balance.
Even though Roy Jones broke Castro's nose he still didn't have him in anything approaching the shape JDJ did. I don't know how he was doing it, but he was literally beating him to death in there. The shape his face was in at the end was frightening. Also, John David Jackson is attached to both Bernard Hopkin's and Nate Campbell at the moment. He's supposedly taught Campbell a lot in the past few years, they're best friends now and borderline live together at times. Funny how a near forgotten fighter had a part in some of the biggest upsets of the past few years.
good stylist and great movement, he just wasnt a exciting fighter as they call it, i dont think his chin was weak but he was opening so much in the castro fight that any return punch was gonna land flush......and it did. also didnt he train green for a while?
I only saw him in the Castro fight. He looked good but was having it so much his own way he got careless.I remember the British comentator saying if the fight had been held in the uk Castro would have certainly been stopped way before he landed that big shot,i totaly agreed with him and was stunned when Castro won.
The problem with John David Jackson was he was very boring and uninteresting to watch. Watching the Jackson/Pyatt fight makes you realize why the sport died, it was awful and it was on Terrestrial TV, all be it not live. Jackson was very good at what he did, but that was too boring to watch, when he finally opened up and went for it, so did his '0'!
Slick southpaw with blazing speed but he had a very bad chin. But the man could box with the best of them in his prime.Outboxed Davey Moore but got dropped twice.Outboxed Tyrone Trice but got dropped.
