    John H. Stracey

    June 22, 1976

    The WBC Welterweight Champion, 25 1/2 year-old - John. H. Stracey,
riding high after 'upsetting' Jose Napoles for the WBC Championship
    on December 6, 1975, and a destruction of perenial #1 Challenger -
Hedgemon Lewis in his 'first defense' on March 20, 1976.

In what appeared to be a relatively easy 'second defense' versus
    Californian - Carlos Palomino.

The solid punching Champion, with a record of 44-3-1 (36 KO's), was an
overwhelming 10-1 Betting-favorite over the strong, but limited skilled challenger.

The 5' 8" Englishman, was a classic stand-up boxer, who carried solid power in his
punches. And his non-stop pressure attack, and ever growing confidence made
    him a solid Champion.

Before the bout, while screening tapes of Palomino's last fights, Terry Lawless -
Manager of the Champion was not impressed. Though Palomino had a good jab,
he appeared not to offer much of anything else. A stand-up boxer who had
no big punch, and who was only effective when he stayed on top of his opponent.
From the outside, he could easily be out-boxed, and discouraged. Really, a
    perfect opponent for John.

Mickey Duff even stated, that Palomino's record of 19-1-3 (9 KO's) was more
impressive than the fighter himself. We saw his last '3' fights, and he was the
easiest of all the fighters we screened. We were looking for a nice easy fight
for John. Carlos looked like a predictable plodder, nothing more than a good
    club fighter.

The 26 1/2 year-old Carlos (one year older than the Champion) was the #9 WBC
ranked Welterweight. Though Carlos wanted the fight, his Manager - Jackie McCoy
wasn's so sure, and had doubts on whether Carlos was ready.

Needless to say, they accepted the $20,000 fight purse as the Challenger, and
entered the ring in London as a 10-1 Underdog.

John H. Stracey can't believe he just lost his title by a 12th Round Knockout to
underdog Carlos Palomino. Here, John hands over the WBC Championship Belt.

I watch that stoppage every couple of weeks just about...brutal finish...Most guys wouldn't have got up the first time, let alone a second to be stopped on his feet.

That's Stracey's own damn fault too...... Johnny Boy beat an aged Joe Naps in '75 and then blows his title to a 27 year old Palomino in '76...

The Skinny on the West Coast,

Carlos should have lost all '3'' of his Draws on his record..

    He should have been 19-4-0.

While I certainly believe Stracey's camp may have underestimated Palomino I don't believe any of those quotes

'Staying At The Top Of His Class'

Discussing Carlos' first defense with Armando 'Mando' Muniz.

After reading it, you can apologize.

Also discussed, Mickey Duff owning the first '2' options on Carlos'
    title defenses.

Jackie McCoy wanted the Japanese Champion, but Mickey said 'NO',
Carlos had to fight Armando Muniz first.

Nothing really to apologise for Pepe so Duff thought it was an easy defence for Stracey, there's no quotes from Lawless or anyone else from the Stracey camp.
By the way I was a big Palomino fan

    Empire Pool - Wembley

John H. Stracey hits the canvas in Round 12, from a horrific body punch.

Carlos floored the Champion 'twice' in Round 12 with body blows.

With John H. Stracey holding his guard high, Carlos started going to the
    body in Round 4.

After the bout, the now former Champion's handlers said that Carlos
Palomino wasn't the same fighter we saw in those fight tapes. He's a
    'ringer'.

I do remember Stracey being disrespectful to Palomino after the fight when being interviewed in the ring making excuses saying "I don't know how I got beat of that bum"
Sticking a mike under a fighters nose just after losing a championship fight he can say some things he might regret later but I always thought Stracey never came over very well.

John did not regard Carlos as a quality fighter.

They considered him nothing more than a Olympic Auditorium 'house fighter'.

And going by Carlos' 'dull' 10-Round Decision win over Arizona Light-Middleweight
'club-fighter' - Mike Avans in Febrauary 1976 - Palomino did not look like a 'World
Class Fighter', that a Champion would have to worry about.

Unfortunately, John H. Stracey after boxing effectively thru 3-Rounds, gave Carlos
a big target to whack, when he brought up his guard in Round 4.

John absorbed way too many punishing body blows, and those left hooks were
    body-numbing shots.

Palomino was a good welterweight and champ of the 1970s, but I'm not sure he did enough to be labled ATG or inducted in Canastota......
