This Traveller thing in England seems to have escalated dramatically in the last 10 or 20 years.
When I was growing up as a kid in the 60's I don't recall them being a presence anywhere at all.
They seem to be everywhere now,drive around the towns and the fringes of the towns and their horses seem to be tethered everywhere.
Are they all from Ireland or are there others who are just "pretend" Travellers?

There has always been a tremendous amount of talented traveller boxers but discipline has always been a problem without the other factors.

The family feuds that go on,well they are never going to end and will no doubt get worse.

 

Its a tricky one though because the fueds are one of the main reason their are so many quality traveller boxers. As they all learn how to fight at a young age to defend themselves

However the fueds and lack of discipline mean very few of them ever realise there potential

Considering the number of travellers in Ireland its incredible the amount of talented boxers they produce

Last census said there are 35,000 travellers in Ireland. In most irish senior squads 2 or 3 out of 10 fighters are travellers .Out of the 9 world championship medels Ireland has 3 of them were won by travellers Thats ridiculous considering how much of the population they make up

Well if everyone takes YOUR attitude the feuds certainly will never end.....come on MW, where theres a will theres a way....

 

Couldn't agree with you more the talent pool produces some real quality & that's the ones we know of.

Many fall away lose interest etc.I have said to people I know in boxing if you can keep these lads busy,active fighting regularly but without the other distractions sky is the limit...but there lies the problem!

I was helping a friend a few years back at a gym in North London it was open walk in session's on several afternoons in the week.A few traveller lads would come in,train ok no bother one lad particularly talented.

He came in all the time for about 6 weeks solid,sparred mixed well and became pretty friendly....

Told me what he was training for a bare-knuckle fight I wasn't surprised just thought what a waste....

Very true MW. I completely agree it cant be solved entirely within the traveller community itself.
The rest of us (the majority of the population - us tax-payers and non-travellers) have a role too.
We are the paymasters after all - and the guy who pays the piper is supposed to call the tune. Maybe its time we did.

no but are you suggesting we cut of funding to travellers since were taxpayers is it? If your saying we should do something then you should have some idea what that is

Well thats what most would say anyway!

For starters we could lobby our public reps to hit "feuders" wher it hurts....in their wallet.
What do the 35,000 or so travellers in Ireland cost us every year?
Are there others more deserving of this money?
Tough problem needs tough choices , tough decisions.

In a broke country living on borroewd money can we afford these "citizens"?
Even if we can, is it morally and ethically right to give scarce resources to them while so many others are in need? Tough choices....

Certainly if a guy is fit enough to swing a golf club and break JJs leg...then he is fit for work. Bye bye dole, bye bye medical card, bye bye a whole raft of other benefits from that guy for starters,....

 

Cutting funds to poor or disadvantaged families wont improve the problem it will only make it worse. You wont find any example in history of where cutting funding and resources to a disadvantaged section of the population has resulted in less social problems, it will only make things worse. Iv a feeling if these guys arent getting their money there not going to suddenly look for gainful employment, they will more than likely turn to crime

What they should do is monitor the internet video's more, and concentrate on the main people involved, charge the guys who put up these videos with fines and long jail sentences with the guys caught fighting.

Also continue to provide the educational services directed at travellers, education is the main weapon they can use to combat this behavior.

Cutting money to these groups might be the popular opinion on what to do but it doesnt work that way in reality
