Obviously wlad's career has not yet come to a close and for all we know he could well lose his next few fights so i'll render that point moot

It is so hard to conceptualise the era of sullivan, I mean it was practically a different sport back then but, as you say, he's the founder of the modern concept of heavyweight champion.

Schmellings main claim to fame is beating up joe luis and that's almost as great a feat as anyone will accomplish.

As for jeffries he had a good career, by all accounts he was a master of the sweet science. It is hard rationalising the skills of those from bygone eras.

Lately i've been watching more and more old footage and documentaries of the past masters and the careers fascinate me. I only became a hardcore boxing fan in the last 5 years and I feel the time is right to start broadening my horizons.

From what points of reference are we evaluating Sullivan here?

Sullivan esentialy arived at the intersection between the bareknuckle era and the gloved era.

Like Jem Mace, he played a key role in deciding which way the sport would drift. Both of them pushed it towards the Queensbury rules.

Of course that prety much makes Sullivan a "miscelaneous".

You can't easily compare him to either the great bare knuckle fighters of history, or the great gloved fighters!

I'm no fan of Haye but I have a hard time believing a tiny heavyweight fighting when Queen Victoria was on the throne can handle a modern 6'3 heavyweight with the speed and power Haye has. It's easy for Sullivan fans to hype a guy who no one has seen fight for over a 100 years, but on paper it doesn't look good for him

Haye is a heavyweight now. If this is Sullivan vs a cruiserweight Haye it may be a different story, but it's not.

    Even with his 1900s style?

So Sullivan's style is good enough to beat skilled modern cruiserweights, but not guys who are an extra 20lb or so overweight?

Maybe 210-230 when he looked like this, very overweight, certainly not his prime weight by any means, Sullivan would be a LHW today if he was in shape

I'm not saying that, I just meant I was talking about heavyweight Haye rather than cruiserweight Haye

I don't think Sullivan does too well against an elite cruser, maybe he'd give Huck a scrap though as he isn't too skilled

Thompson has 2" in height, reach and obviously loads of muscle on Sullivan, plus he has superior technique

Being an over-rated old-timer doesn't mean you're quite bad enough to lose to David Haye.

Sullivan's best weight I think was closer to 190 pounds. He looked fairly fit in his younger days.

Many pictures of him are from when he was older.
