So again you have nothing , zero. Your's is the poorest argument I have ever seen posted on this Board. The fact that you stand by it reflects on you.

Ruiz was a pretty good boxer/spoiler type. He was infamous for boring fights and famous for getting whacked out early by Tua. How many rounds here? I'd go with Ruiz on points, but give Sullivan a puncher's chance for sure.

Ruiz was reasonably durable, at age 39 it took Haye 9 rounds to stop him. Believe, me I wanted Ruiz out of top-level boxing for years. He would not go away, quietly so to speak. The man was durable with cockroach-like survival skills.

Ruiz went the distance with Golota, Chagaev, Holyfield, Valuev, Rahman, McCline, and Johnson, winning some and losing others.

All these guys can hit, and none of them had Ruiz in trouble.

Obviously, the seven names I mentioned did not his as hard as Tua. It's anyone's guesses how hard Sullivan hit. If John L only hit as hard as the seven names I mentioned, odds are he's not stopping Ruiz either and will be outboxed, and clinched in a distance loss.

I view Sullivan as a less refined Ingo Johansson type. A big right-hand puncher in a time with few, he stood out.

Hard to say given the paucity of records from the period.

He seems to have broadly fought whoever the media saw as the most legitimate threats to him.

He fought the best available, and it is hard to say exactly how good they were.

    That's a pretty damn raw fighter, I'd imagine. :risas3:

We all know that Baltimore drug gang enforcer Hasim Rahman, with his 500+ pound benchpress and ability to launch thru a windshield at maximum speed would be shaking in his boots at seeing this feller strut down the alley...

Are you judging his entire career based off of boxrec?

Of course his resume will look weak if you only look at gloved rules, when bareknuckle was still so prevelent.

Also, it's a hilarious misconception that bareknuckle fighter consisted of a bunch of drunken brawlers. It looks like just before Sullivan the era was likely a bit weak, with more depth earlier, but there were still skilled fighters, extremely skilled fighters.

You don't beat people 40lbs heavier and matching people in their prime while in their 40's by being a drunken brawler.

Who knows what Sullivan was capable of? To me, he belongs in a fantasy fight about as much as Davy Crockett or Johnny Appleseed does.

    Perhaps you are right.

The least you can say for him, is that he obviously existed!

I'm just gonna go by logic here.

Usain Bolt and the rest of the top one hundred 100m runners would annihilate any 19th century sprinter.
Roger Federer and the rest of the top 100 men's tennis players would annihilate any 19th century tennis player.
Messi and the rest of the top 100 soccer players in the world would annihilate any 19th century footballers.

I think you know where I'm going with this...

It's not really true though. The sprint times are faster now, but they are done on purpose made tracks to get people as fast as possible. Some of the sprints back then were done on uneven stretches of grass, and the early tracks were a soft cinder.

They did an experiment recently where they got Andre De Grasse to try to replicate Jesse Owens performance on an authentic period track.

    He didn't even come close!

He won silver in the 200m, and bronze in the 100m, in Rio.

I would say that this is a big blow to the argument that sprinters have improved.
