John Mugabi of 1990 / '91 was a sorry S.O.B.

    Folks,

John Mugabi has got to be one of the most overrated flops in the history of modern day boxing.

I knew all along since I first began following "The Beast" in 1984 that he was powerful, yet flawed in the skill dept..

I didn't turn away on John Mugabi after his 1986 KO loss to Marvin Hagler or his fluke loss to Duane Thomas. I just figured it was a bad year physically, not financially for team Mugabi.. Simple...

As far as John Mugabi kayoing Rene Jacquot in 1989, well, no biggie... The french guy was a chump of a WBC title holder at 154 pounds... YAWN!

BUT! Come 1990 and 1991, poor ol' Mugabi met his match / matches with Terry Norris and Gerald McClellan... John Mugabi was smoked 2 X like a Thai Stick and was out on his face in both events in the opening round... WICKED!

    C'mon back...

    Speaking of G-Man, I just found my "McClellan-Jackson 1" fight of 1993...

I watched a green G-Man KO 1 Mugabi just a little while ago... BRUTAL!

Mugabi ended up in Oz fighting and losing to some of the locals. Bit sad

Yeah, but Mugabi was fat, bald and bloated by the time he went to a land down under to finish up his sagging career...
    :patsch:shock:

Even sadder is...I think he went back to the UK after that, to fight some more over there

Shame about Mugabi. I always loved his wild, aggresive style. He should have achieved more, but was never the same after Hagler.

Still, he gave Hagler one hell of a fight!

"If you won't listen to me, John, listen to the father." Classic!

I agree, Hagler ruined him with that brutal beatdown.

There's a great Mugabi KO reel on You Tube. Check it out, he was quite a brute before meeting Hagler.

True. But Duff and Francis spoon-fed Mugabi a buncha' bums, stiffs, hasbeens and defenseless sluggers to feed on prior to his epic with Marvin Hagler in March 1986....

Mugabi used Bill Bradley on ESPN in Aug. 1985 as his tune-up fight... Mugabi looked normal in that stinker... UGH!

Hagler definitely knocked some of the stuffing out of him.
Then next fight he got stopped by Duane Thomas, but he claimed reasonably that it was a thumb in the eye.

Truth is though, Mugabi was known to party, drink, gamble etc.
    Lifestyle probably ruined him.

Mugabi was definitely not the same warrior after 1986.... Mugabi was ruined by "Hagler & Thomas."

KO losses to "Norris & G-man" was just added icing on his spoiled cake...

I don't even consider it a good win for Hagler, Mugabi is a joke.

Mugabi was really a Jr MW when he fought Hagler.

He should have moved up to MW and got some more experience at the heavier wt. before taking on Marvin.

Mugabi immediately moved back down to Jr. MW to win the title in his first fight post-Hagler.

"Hagler-Mugabi" of '86 is an epic classic at middleweight. Its one of my all-time 160 lb. fights to review.. Peace...

Immediately after the Mugabi fight, Hagler was questioning if he was

over the hill. He was, that was the reason Mugabi looked so good
