Hagler Mugabi was a great fight! One of Hagler's most entertaing and Mugabi really did try to go after him. Round 7 (i think) was classic by any standard. So what if Hagler was past his best. So what if Mugabi was a blown up junior middle. Its prizefighting. Skills and nobility aside its all about grown men fighting for money and Hagler Mugabi was a classic tear up. Only shame about it was that it totally derailed Mugabi's career. Some people are too hard on Mugabi. He was a good prospect early on with an explosive, entertaining style. However he wasn't well managed and then Hagler ruined him. Boxing is rough, give Mugabi a break.
I'm curious what would have happened had Mugabi faced Hearns and Shuler fought Hagler on that '86 card in Vegas.... HMMM! MR.BILL
Mugabi was a legimate contender. He ko'd the usually durable Curtis Parker in one brutal round in '83. That performance alone showed Mugabi was legitimate as Parker could fight. No other fighter ever did that to Parker, except Micheal Nunn. Then he gave Hagler a competitive fight. Norris and Gerald McClelan were top notch fighters and Mugabi was faded a bit by then. To answer your question MrBill, Hearns probably would have outboxed Mugabi, but with Hearn's fragile chin, there's the posibility Mugabi could have ko'd him. Hearns probably didn't want to fight him. Hagler would have easily ko'd Shuler.
Duff never matched his man Mugabi with a tall dude with speed, power and a wicked jab.... I too, think Hearns out-boxes Mugabi since Mugabi was slower and not as polished.... However, yes, if Mugabi landed a lucky shot, he'd KO Hearns....... MR.BILL:deal
