John Ruiz gets three title shots against an old Ali in the late 70s, one against Leon Spinks, and one against an old Ken Norton instead of Holmes.

Does he win the heavyweight crown at any point?

    Hell yes.

Ruiz is so underrated. A very strong operator with a more than stiff right hand. Everyone says he's **** until they have to share a ring with him. Wipes the floor with old ass Ali and Spinks. Fights to a draw with Norton.

You think Ruiz almost equals Holmes's performance against Norton?

(Or was it you who pointed out that the Norton/Holmes bout wasn't as close as we remember it?)

Post-Tua Ruiz was a Smooth Operator.

I think Ruiz beats Leon Spinks, has a close fight with an old Ali likely losing a controversial decision and gets beat by Norton. All three fights would likely go the distance.

This. Depends on what Ali shows up, the older the better Ruiz's chances.

This is true, still I feel the Ali who fought Shavers and Spinks would have a good chance of being able to do enough to get the decision over Ruiz.

Ruiz loses them all, except maybe Spinks. And on the night Spinks won the title, he would lose to Spinks too.

What is with this rating Ruiz as a quality heavyweight lately?

What's with rating Leon and Bert Cooper as quality heavyweights?

We know Ruiz was capable of trading close wins with an aging great, so I say he likely goes 1-1-1 against the fading Ali or something weird like that in three hideous wrestling matches. Same applies to the fading Norton, Ruiz has a good shot of making it an ugly close fight and likely scraping the decision.

Ruiz would frustrate and neutralize Leon's pressure to win an ugly decision or a controversial draw of some sorts.

So we have likely pinpointed a time in history where Ruiz was capable of holding the lineal Championship. He wouldn't keep it very long but he would certainly hold it at least once. With King at his side, he's going to get some dubious decisions as well. If there's no Holmes coming up, I wander who gets the strap off him?

In addition to Holyfield, Ruiz managed wins over lots of solid fighters like Johnson, Rahman, Oquendo, and Golota.

Who said I rated either as quality heavyweights?

I only stated they were better than garbage title holders like Ruiz.
