I'm not trolling. The first sentence of your post is hilarious. I'm not saying it's wrong.

If we are talking about the Ruiz that beat Holyfield in 2000, then he knocks out the weak glass jawed Spinks, and loses a decision to Norton..

In 1979, the faded ring worn Ali had health issues and was 37, I think Ruiz out hustles the great one for decision..

Ruiz was tough to beat... but nothing smooth about Ruiz. He was hard to watch and a technical disaster. He got away with a lot of holding, holding and hitting, and plenty of other rough tactics. When he fought Roy Jones Jr. he didn't get away with shlt right from the start and Jones won pretty easily after round 1.

Tough guy, seemed like a decent guy, but far from great.

If active during the 1970s, John Ruiz probably would do his utmost to have Tony Perez be the referee in his bouts. After all, Perez allowed Muhammad Ali to clinch constantly during his second bout with Joe Frazier.

With tolerant referees, ring judges and state athletic commissions, Ruiz may have eked out wins with his "jab-and-grab" style in world heavyweight championship bouts during the late 1970s.

Ruiz wouldn't SNIFF a title if the RULES of boxing were properly enforced. He was a talentless cheater whose connections with Don King got him title shots he didn't deserve, and "victories" he shouldn't have "won."

Once Ruiz discovered his mediocre boxing abilities wouldn't be competitive with top level fighters, he then resorted to blatantly and repeatedly violating the rules against excessive holding. And his connections with King allowed him to get away with it! :patsch

And let's not forget Ruiz's overacting when hit with borderline body shots to force bogus, and decisive, "low blow" calls in at least three fights (Thunder, Holyfield II, Johnson).

Ruiz ripped off the fans of seeing the boxing matches they PAID to see with his illegal and disgraceful tactics, and how he cheated his opponents of their opportunity to win WITHIN the rules!!

John Ruiz is a disgrace to the sport of boxing. Exhibit A of the corruption that is ruining this sport. A glorified clubfighter who wouldn't have sniffed a title without Don King.

Deadset worst champion the heavys has ever ever had back to John L Sullivan . Zackmans right - clubfighter who had the luck of a million Irishmen combined to be around in a era of multiple heavyweight champs which has devalued the sport of boxing.

I'm not sure what all the beating around the bush was about then. I certainly see a strange 1-1-1 scenario like the Holyfield Trilogy. Like Evander, Ali's style at this stage of his career wasn't too pretty either. These matches would be ugly affairs with weird scorecards. Ruiz getting ripped off one match, Ruiz winning clearly in another, Ali making a better account of himself but maybe getting robbed because King wants him out..etc.

Golota was a robbery and he was down twice. He also holds the historic distinction of losing a HW title to two former MW's, something that hadn't been done for over a century and he managed the feat twice in under 2 years. I know Toney tested positive, NC, etc.

Yeah, we know he lost to Toney and Jones. Doesn't change what I wrote. Golota was ugly and close because of the knockdowns, but not alot of cries of "robbery" from sports media.

I scored the fight 113-112 for Ruiz. I gave Golota round two by a 10-7 margin and round four 10-8 due to the point loss on account of Ruiz hitting on the break. But I only gave Andrew two other rounds. The rest of the time, he allowed John to get off first.

Ruiz (41-5-1) won most of the late rounds to pull out a hard fought win over Golota (38-5-1), who was fighting for a title for the second straight time.

This writer here clearly hates Ruiz and still gives him the fight.

The thing (I can’t bring myself to call it a fight, I see better ones outside my local kebab shop ever Friday night) got worse as it went on but Ruiz landed a handful of cleaner shots in most of the rounds. Which isn’t saying much.

Ruiz would've beaten Spinks and the 1978 version of Ali. The former quite convincingly but even the 36 year old incarnation of Ali would give John a close one. 1978 Norton beats Ruiz.

I agree with you for the most part, but I can't blame John Ruiz for finding a loophole in order to compete successfully in the heavyweight division. At least, Ruiz came into the ring prepared and knew what he had to do. Instead, I blame the boxing authorities for allowing Ruiz employ such a fighting style.

Ruiz would have controlled many an era in the division.

He was like a great knuckleball pitcher in baseball. He befuddled opponents with his unorthodox genius.

Im trying to figure this out. Are giving John Ruiz five shots at arguably the weakest HW division in history to somehow say "he may have won one so hes not all that bad" or "he couldnt even beat those guys, see how crappy he was?" Lets say Ruiz beats an old, overweight, parkinson's effected Ali, Norton (the only HW champion to NEVER win a championship fight), and Leon Spinks. Lets say he wins all five fights. That doesnt really mean **** to me. Ruiz is still garbage. Now the crux of that argument is I dont think Ruiz could win five out five and that really tells you how crappy he is. Zakman is exactly right. Ruiz was like a cancer in boxing or at least one of its symptoms. He would have never been a contender without connections. He would have never beaten Holyfield without connections. And he would have never retained his title without those connections. Yeah yeah yeah. He beat Rahman, who was never that great and was coming off two losses and a draw. Yeah he beat Kirk Johnson, who was garbage, had a heart the size of a mustard seed and who hadnt fought in a year despite sitting on his rating forever. Yeah he beat Oquendo who was also garbage and coming off a loss. As far as Im concerned he didnt beat Golota but even if you think he did what of it. Its Golota.
