It WOULD be impressive IF he had actually beaten those fighters WITHIN the rules. Too bad he cheated in every fight.:yep
I for one, was supportive of Ruiz's claim that he'd stick to this new style and I am very disappointed to hear that he apparently went back to his clinching nonsense. but from the sound of how it went, I don't really care to see it, regardless of who caused the clinching.
Exactly! Im not a fan of his style, but I am a fan of Ruiz. Win or lose, for the past 8 or 9 years hes been in with some of the best heavies and has almost always kept it close. He's an overacheiver.
Kept it close by HOLDING EXCESSIVELY, FAKING "low blows" and - when all else fails, relying on DON KING to get him a GIFT DECISION. Ruiz is a FRAUD - a glorified clubfighter who never would have sniffed the rankings, let alone "won" a belt, without King.
for a guy who has sooo little...he's accomplished sooo much. he beat holyfield convincingly...unlike lewis. lewis chose to vacate instead of face ruiz. the word was that ruiz was giving him all he(lewis) could handle in sparring. i like ruiz. i didn't in the beginning..but when u can appreciate some of the intricacies of the sweetscience...u realize that he has some skill and a high level of understanding to be able to beat guys who are bigger, faster and stronger. ruiz is the man! very underrated.
I don't think the words "sweet science" and "skill" belong in the same sentence with "John Ruiz". :good
If the refs didn't penalize him for holding or the supposed faking of low blows, who's fault is that. It certainly isn't Ruiz's. As far as King getting him "gift decisions", I have one question.......why? What exactly did Ruiz bring to the table that would make King keep bailing him out? Rahman, Golota and Johnson all would have made King much more money than Ruiz. So, what then? Face facts, the guy was an overacheiver.
The refs didn't penalize him because they KNOW where their bread is buttered. King pulls the strings and boxing officials dance. He wanted to try to market Ruiz to the Latino market - what he didn't bargain for is that Latino fans know boxing, and they weren't buying Ruiz's crap. Like any knowlegable boxing fans, they know a shitty clubfighter when they see one. Having Ruiz as his patsy allowed King to control the WBA title and match Ruiz with more popular fighters to pump up the gate. Unlike more popular fighters, Ruiz couldn't just bolt from King's clutches and sign with other promoters. Ruiz and his people knew he'd be nowhere without King, so they did as they were told. Once King realized that the jig was up and he couldn't even get HBO money for Ruiz's hug-filled fights, he dropped him like a hot potato. And until McCline, he hadn't won a fight over a live body since. There's a REASON for that! Ruiz has NO legitimate boxing ability to speak of.
